The library was closed by the time we got there.
That is one of our favorite places to spend an afternoon – thrilling, I know 🙂 We didn’t realize it closes at 5pm on Saturdays. On the weekdays the closing time is later.
Without the library, what can my husband and I do on a Saturday late afternoon?
We don’t want to spend money; we don’t want to drive too far; we don’t like the mall; I didn’t feel like getting food.
My ideal would be to have access to museums and national parks within 15 minutes drive of Walnut, CA. Since that’s not going to happen, we had to be creative and use our imagination…
We got a similar feel of the outdoors and the learning experience of a museum in the 2 places we ended up:
1. Walking around the golf course. The nicely manicured course and open space gave a relaxing feeling. It was also fun watching golfers – mostly watched them miss! We were not within earshot to hear any expletives. The closest I’ve been to golfing is miniature golfing. I can appreciate the frustration of trying to get that little ball to go where you want it to go. My husband and I have no desire to take up that sport. But the greenery of the course sure is nice.
2. Walking around a nursery. Did you know that the Donut Nectarine, also known as flat nectarine or Saturn nectarine, came to the U.S. from seeds from China? You can learn more than just the price by reading the tags on the plants at a nursery. This nursery also sold rocks, which were priced from $3 for a small rock about 8″ in diameter, to $100 for a big rock (not boulder size). I didn’t know rocks were so expensive. I love looking at the different types of fruit trees, the flowering plants, and ornamental bushes. There was also some interesting topiary. It was *almost* like going to a museum. Sort of.
The best part of our trip was just enjoying a nice warm day with my husband. Afterall, what can 2 almost-empty-nesters do in a serene suburb but to enjoy one another’s company?
