Recipe for a successful VBS:
Take an amateur but talented musician with a lot of enthusiasm and have him put together a live band of equally enthusiastic and talented teenagers to play the music and lead songs for the kids. It would even be better if he could take a week off work to hang out around church and work on last minute details.
Have a few young teens do the Bible story skits, teens who have no experience in acting, but who will surprise you with hidden talents to improvise the script. Ask a young man with a heart of love and patience for those teens to keep them focused on the task.
Ask a couple of teenage boys with a lot of energy and dry humor to lead the games.
Take a mature, responsible girl who just graduated from college who happens to have nothing to do for several weeks before starting work to come up with craft ideas, shop for materials, and pick up the odds and ends.
Take a dozen and a half or more teenagers to lead the children in small groups, teens who love kids and who themselves are kids at heart. They must be teachable, who do not think they are too cool to hang out with little kids, and not be preoccupied with their own lives to share a week with others.
Find a few artistic girls who love to draw and paint, who are willing to spend their summer days making backdrops and decorations instead of sleeping in.
Find a woman who is good with finding good deals for food and willing to spend all day making treats and cutting up ingredients for snacks.
A tech person or 3 who can do last minute Powerpoints, slide shows, video clips and more would be ideal.
Make sure you have a director who is not normally an organized person nor can attend to details, so that when the job is done, you will know it was the power of God and not of herself. Have her focus her team on God and His Kingdom. Give her a couple of supportive friends with whom she can consult ideas. She would also need a very understanding and supportive husband to put up with her mean stressful moods.
Lastly, have many people praying for the event, so that when it looks like you would only have 30 kids attending, God answers those prayers and bring 70 kids, including many who has never heard the gospel message.
