What can you do to amuse yourself on a hot afternoon?
I read a book – Death of a Maid, by M. C. Beaton.
In this Hamish Macbeth series, the victim is always someone annoying whom everyone wants dead. No one feels sorry for the deceased, so almost everyone in the small seaside village is a suspect.
In Death of a Maid, a snooping housekeeper is murdered. Her husband was relieved rather than broken up over the news. In fact, his cancer went into remission after she died because he was so much happier without her!
Questioning the suspects over and over again got a little long. But overall, the ending was satisfying, though not particularly clever.
Other books in M.C. Beaton’s series include Death of a Nag, Death of a Traveling Man, Death of a Macho Man, Death of a Glutton… you get the idea.
