Written in 1923, The Dark Frigate by Charles B. Hawes chronicles the adventures of young Philip Marsham. Phil was taught by his father to love the sea, so rather than staying with his studies, he left the safe life behind and joined the crew on board the Rose of Devon. Phil’s journeys took him to living the life of a pirate against his will. He makes a full circle around and ends up once more on the Rose of Devon.

Amy read this book for school, and I read along with her to explain to her what she couldn’t understand in the language of old English. The plot is quite amusing, but a lot of people die in this book. The ending is not as happy as I would like it to be, but it didn’t keep me up at night. I recommend it for leisure reading, no heavy thinking, just an amusing story.
