My husband came home and told me the office has to buy yet another coffee maker.
We go through several coffee makers a year because the glass pitcher gets broken. We’ve tried various brands – Braun coffee makers, Hamilton brand, and Krups. They all seem to be about the same. The coffee maker part works fine, but when the pitcher cracks and breaks, it costs about the same to replace the pitcher than it is to buy a brand new coffee maker. The entire coffee maker costs only about $18 while the glass pitcher alone costs about $12. Surely the electrical parts of the coffee maker costs more than $6 to manufacture, but apparently it’s not worth their while to sell just the container.
Why can’t they make the glass pitcher replacement a standard stock item cheaper? Or is it a conspiracy to make you buy a new coffee maker? It seems such a waste to pollute our landfill with coffee makers that work perfectly fine, other than the missing pitcher.
I told my husband to consider buying one of those stainless steel coffee makers. However, they are more expensive, and by the time you pay for one of those, you can break 3-4 of the glass ones and still come out ahead. There is no incentive to be green.

Many thrift stores sell extra glass pitchers separately. I’ve found replacements quite a few times, but there are some pitcher sizes/shapes that are unusual and unfortunately hard to replace. This can be an easy option if you go out of your way to find a coffeemaker that uses the most common type of pitcher.

We just broke two pitchers within a week of each other. I took a metal bowl and placed below. Then i tried taping the button but that was not very good. Finally, i took the filter cup out and saw a rubber ring inside for the button. I took a knife and cut it off. Voila, perfect coffee maker and now i don’t have to worry about wasting another plastic / glass contraption.
