Since the liberals are so concern for the poor and want the government spending on all kinds of social programs, do they put their money where their mouth is by personally giving more to the poor?
Arthur Brooks, the author of “Who Really Cares,” says that “when you look at the data, it turns out the conservatives give about 30 percent more.” He adds, “And incidentally, conservative-headed families make slightly less money.”
And he says the differences in giving goes beyond money, pointing out that conservatives are 18 percent more likely to donate blood. He says this difference is not about politics, but about the different way conservatives and liberals view government.
“You find that people who believe it’s the government’s job to make incomes more equal, are far less likely to give their money away,” Brooks says. In fact, people who disagree with the statement, “The government has a basic responsibility to take care of the people who can’t take care of themselves,” are 27 percent more likely to give to charity.
Seems to me that liberals who advocate more government spending for the poor only do so because it’s not their own money they are spending…where is the compassion in that?

I see it another way from a UK point of view. The elimination of poverty is one of our (left of centre)government’s key aims and in the UK, most people (including myself) see the role of government to be one which gives security to its citizens, the five most important being economic (eg the Northern Rock rescue), financial (social security, child benefit etc), health (the National Health Service), the maintenance of public order and the protection of the nation.
If people are unhappy with the government’s record, then they will vote them out.

Good points. Unfortunately, by the time you vote them out, the damage has been done!
