Since I’ve read all the Agatha Christie books and am even rereading some of them, Rex Stout is probably my next choice of mystery writers.
In And Four To Go, Nero Wolfe and his sidekick Archie Goodwin solves 4 murders. The last one – Murder in No Joke – is the best.
The other three are Christmas Party, Easter Parade, and Fourth of July Picnic.
That’s right, a murder occurs at each of those celebratory events.
It is not easy to craft an intriguing murder with a reasonable resolution within 50 pages. The characters have to be developed quickly yet full enough in order for the reader to guess along who the murderer might be. Rex Stout did a pretty good job with these 4 short stories. Some of his others were not as good.
