Here’s another thought I had about George Muller.
His first desire was to be a missionary. He left Prussia to go to England to receive training to reach the Jews, with the intention of going to Russia after his training. However, while in England, he saw the great needs there and decided he can share the gospel there rather than spending time in learning Hebrew.
When he was 70, he finally fulfilled his life-long dream of being a missionary. For the next 17 years, he traveled to 42 countries and preached to some 3 million people. He lived till he was 92.
In the last 2 years, I’ve been thinking about fulfilling my life-long dream of being a missionary.
When I was in my 20’s, I knew there were 2 things I want to do: have a family and raise up good kids, and serve God. I figured I could serve God anywhere, and here at home in the US is just as well as any other place. So I never went on any overseas missions trips.
God has granted me my desires of having a family and serving churches and the community. But soon, my parenting job, while never completely done even when the children are adults, will necessarily take a back seat.
So to fulfill my life-long dream of being a missionary, I want to get ready to go in 8 years or so. I will be 58. I figure I have at most 10 good years left in my life to be a missionary. However, if Muller didn’t start till he was 70, and was able to still have 17 years of serving God, I may have more time than I thought possible.
