When someone tells me that laws can never change a fallen person\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s heart, I ask them if they apply that philosophy to their children. Does the moral training of our children consist merely of preaching the Gospel to them? Wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t we consider it unconscionable to neglect a child\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s moral instruction with the excuse that laws can never change a child\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rebellious heart?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What specifically does it mean to say that Christians should avoid \u00e2\u20ac\u0153politics\u00e2\u20ac\u009d? Initially it meant that churches shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t campaign for a particular candidate. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Keep religion in the domain of theology, morality, and family relationships,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d we were told, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153and leave politics to the pros.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Little by little, though, more things have been included under the broad rubric of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153politics.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d One by one the secularists co-opted the moral issues, called them political, and told us to get off of the playing field.<\/p>\n

The Church was told, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Abortion is not merely a moral issue anymore. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s political.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d What about the morality of alternate sexuality like lesbianism, homosexuality, man-boy \u00e2\u20ac\u02dclove,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and incest? \u00e2\u20ac\u0153That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ours, too.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Same-sex marriage? \u00e2\u20ac\u0153A civic concern. No place for the church.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Family issues like divorce and child support, reproductive technologies, and the education of our children? \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Back off.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Stewardship of the environment, the care of the poor, sex education, birth control, sexual harassment, pornography\u00e2\u20ac\u201dincluding child porn? \u00e2\u20ac\u0153All politics.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Notice the outcome. When Christians follow a policy of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153no politics,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s easy to silence the moral voice of the Church. Simply label any issue \u00e2\u20ac\u0153political\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and followers of Christ wave the white flag.<\/p>\n

This policy is tantamount to surrender. When we are pushed out of the public square, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nothing left to talk about but purely sectarian issues: manner of worship, methods of baptism, music in the sanctuary\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand angels dancing on pins. We are allowed to have our parochial discussions behind the closed doors of our churches, but we can speak of nothing that\u00e2\u20ac\u201din the minds of those we are trying to reach\u00e2\u20ac\u201dhas anything to do with the real world.
