{"id":859,"date":"2008-12-02T08:42:43","date_gmt":"2008-12-02T16:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.katylee.com\/blog\/?p=859"},"modified":"2008-12-02T08:42:43","modified_gmt":"2008-12-02T16:42:43","slug":"shadow-puppet-by-orson-scott-card","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/katylee.com\/blog\/2008\/12\/02\/shadow-puppet-by-orson-scott-card\/","title":{"rendered":"Shadow Puppet by Orson Scott Card"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I said I <a href=\"https:\/\/katylee.com\/blog\/2008\/11\/14\/shadow-of-the-hegemon-by-orson-scott-card\/\" target=\"_self\">wouldn&#8217;t read<\/a> another one, but it was available in the library, I couldn&#8217;t resist.<\/p>\n<p><em>Shadow Puppet<\/em> is next in the series after <em><a href=\"https:\/\/katylee.com\/blog\/2008\/11\/14\/shadow-of-the-hegemon-by-orson-scott-card\/\" target=\"_self\">Shadow of the Hegemon<\/a>.<\/em> The story is exciting, but the characters are getting old.\u00c2\u00a0 Same good guys, same bad guys.<\/p>\n<p>I see how it is very difficult to write a series. You want to retain some continuity, but it would be redundant to keep referring back to the previous books.<\/p>\n<p>One interesting point in Shadow Puppet: since this is a scifi futuristic theme, in vitro fertilization was common in order to pick and choose from the gene pool. But what happens to the fertilized eggs that are not implanted?<\/p>\n<p>The main character Bean expressed grief when a few of his fertilized eggs were discarded. Those were his &#8220;babies&#8221;. He thought of himself as much a murderer as the evil scientist who killed the experimental one-year-old babies. It was a subtle point for the pro-life position, but a well-made one.<\/p>\n<p>I am definitely taking a break and not reading the next in the series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I said I wouldn&#8217;t read another one, but it was available in the library, I couldn&#8217;t resist.
