Getting old

We went to visit an “Independent and Assisted Living” facility with my dad today.
The place is beautiful, and very expensive.

It works pretty much like an insurance policy. You pay for the housing and a monthly fee for services. In exchange, they will take care of you for the rest of your life. You stay in the Independent Living housing as long as you can. When you need assistance, you move to another building, if you need convalescent care, you move to another building. All cost is covered after you pay for the initial entrance fee and the monthly fee.
The longer you live, the more money they lose on you.

When I am old, and unable to enjoy living in mainstream society, I think I would like to be in one of those places. You are pampered, and you are around people your own age who have all the time in the world. No one else has time for you except other old people.

It’s a nice community and a good concept, if you can afford it.

We went to California Adventure on Saturday. We got there at 10:15am and left at 10:15pm. It was great fun. The worst ride was the swinging ferris wheel. I thought I was going to throw up. The best was a tie between the Aladdin show and the Muppets 3-D show.

I like teaching Sunday School because I personally get the most out of it. I hope it helps my students in my class too. One of my goals for my students is that they will find the Bible interesting, and that they will read and study it for themselves.

Some people say the Bible is boring or they do not understand it.

Let me compare it to reading the newspaper. You pick up the newspaper and read, for example, about the Presidential candidates this year. If you know a bit of the current state of the nation, and the background of Bush and Kerry, you will understand the articles about the Presidential race. If you don’t know anything about what’s been going on, you can still understand the articles, but it wouldn’t be as interesting, and parts of the articles will not make sense. However, you do not need to be an expert in current affairs or to know detailed biographical information about Bush and Kerry. In fact, the newspaper articles’ purpose is to give you more understanding of the candidates. It assumes you do not know everything.

So it is with the Bible. You don’t have know a lot about the Bible before you can understand the Bible. But if you know a bit of the background, you will find it more interesting. As you study it more, you will know more about God and what He is saying to you, and then it will be VERY interesting.

The problem is most people don’t take the time to read the Bible.

Most people do not read the Old Testament because they think it’s hard to understand.

Habakkuk is an example of a book in the Bible that few are familiar with, but it is rich with promises from God.
Habakuk was a prophet to Israelites during a difficult period. The Israelites repeatedly disobeyed God. In Habakkuk 1:1-4, Habakkuk gives a description of the state of the country: violence, injustice, strife and conflict abound, the wicked hem in the righteous. It was not a nice place to live, to say the least.

At the end of Habakkuk’s book is my favorite:

Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
YET I WILL REJOICE INT HE LORD,
I WILL BE JOYFUL IN GOD MY SAVIOR.
The Soveriegn Lord is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to go on the heights.

In the worst scenerio, when nothing is going right, I can be joyful.
He is my Savior, He gives me strength.
What more do I need.

How do you decide what to put on your blog?
It’s too embarrassing if it’s too personal.
It’s no fun if to read if it’s not personal enough.

I guess I will put whatever suits my fancy. Perhaps it’ll be something my children and grandchildren will read with interest posthumous. Yes, I think I will post with that in mind, and if I can bring one positive effect in their lives with my recordings, I will be satisfied.
