Things that give me a headache:

1. Reading tutorials to learn to do some computer related task. I see the words, I know what the words mean, but I don’t understand a word it’s saying!

2. Elliot‘s explanation of the tutorial. His “simple” explanation doesn’t make it any clearer.

3. Realizing it took me 2 hours to try to do something that Elliot can do in 2 minutes.

Uggg…

In our little suburban town of 30,000 people, the annual Walnut Family Festival held last Saturday is one of the highlights of the year. The local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troups, Little League and soccer teams, City Council members riding in vintage automobiles, local businesses, the water department, and a “clean” trash truck from the waste disposal company were some of the participants featured in the parade.

Sip or Save

Say, you’re 22 and spend $5 a day on fancy coffee. By retirement (62, for example), you’ll have gulped away $72,800! Put it in an IRA instead, and with interest, you’d have $179,256 (based on 4% APY).

Coffee is no good for you anyway.

Google it

Google saved me a lot of money this week.

1. The office printer Phaser 8200 wasn’t working. The code on the machine says to call for repair. So I called an authorized repair shop. Can you believe they charge $150 per hour – the hourly charge begins when the repairman leaves the shop to the time he returns to the shop! I decided to see if we can fix it ourselves.

I am half way through reading Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut. I am not going to read the rest of it. I don’t like the book.

Is it ok to dislike a book that is suppose to be a literary classic?

In our local library there is a Classic section. I like to read something from that section that I have heard of but have never read. Or I would re-read a classic that I read in high school or college but I didn’t appreciate then. Slaughterhouse-Five belongs in the first catagory. I don’t remember having read any work by Vonnegut. Now I know why.

Slaughterhouse-Five contains too many gruesome details about the lasting psychological pain and physical torture in WWII. I know this is what they call black humor. I know it is suppose to be making some kind of moral statement and all that. Even if it is considered a classic, I just don’t like it.

Time

This comparison struck me today.

Mike and I drove to USC to have breakfast with Elliot this morning. When we left the house, my mother-in-law also went out at the same time. She wanted to walk to the swapmeet at the high school a little over a mile away. We drove about 35 miles to USC, had breakfast with Elliot at the Intervarsity Trojan Christian Fellowship group, and drove 35 miles back. We got home within a minute of my mother-in-law.

Mike and I traveled all the way across the city. We talked to a lot of new people, saw the crowds at USC going to a popular football game (we didn’t go, but Elliot did) in a big city. My mother-in-law only got 1 mile away from home, walked around the swapmeet at the parking lot of a high school and bought 2 pineapples and plums.

It seemed like it should have taken more time for us to accomplish all that we did at such a distance then for my mother-in-law to do what she did.
I don’t know why, but that just struck me as interesting.
Can you help me analyze why something is not right about that?

Precept

Have you heard of Kay Arthur and Precept Ministries?

After 10 years of Bible study with BSF, I am making a change this year.

I joined a Precept Bible study group for women held at my friends church in Chino Hills. We will cover the book of II Timothy.

It was not an easy decision for me to make a change. I like the BSF method of study. I like the people and support I receive from the women at BSF.

However, a change gives me new motivation to study better instead of cruising through complacently. Meeting new women in a smaller group setting may allow me to develop deeper friendships then I was able to do at BSF.

If you are looking for an indepth Bible study that will challenge you, I recommend both BSF and Precept. The resources are available, the rest is up to you.

Dinner

This is to remind myself what I can make for dinner when I can’t think of what to make:

Spinach stuffed sole
Meatloaf

Veggie Lasagna

Seafood alfredo
