Amy is memorizing the Beatitudes, Ten Commandments, Lord’s Prayer, Fruit of the Spirit, and I Corinthinian Chapter 13. She is motivated by a trophy from church for her success.
While helping her, I was struck by how the Beatitudes’ way to live is radically different from what we pursue in life. Who wants to be poor in spirit – we want to be self-sufficient. Who wants to mourn – we all want to be happy. Who wants to be meek – we admire the strong. Who wants to thirst after righteousness – we look out for Number One and live for ourselves.
Yet, God’s Kingdom principles says “Blessed” or happy or deep joy is instore for those who bear these marks of a disciple. The reward is gaining the Kingdom of Heaven.
Instead of getting into a self-improvement program when I face my inadequacies, I need to take the time to mourn over my sins, to see my state of poverty. I will seek to be meek, not acting like the proverbial doormat, but to not strut around like I can control my world. I will pursue doing the right thing even if I lose out.
It all adds up to having a proper view of the Holiness and Awesomeness of God, and a proper view of my fallen self. Then I will experience the power of God’s blessing and His Kingdom.
