Watching a fantastic fireworks show in Cerritos on the 4th, I am proud to be Chinese too.

I liked this Mary Russell book much more than the last one I read.
Warning: Spoiler ahead.
A Monstrous Regiment of Women by Laurie King has some deep thoughts on believing in God. Mary is a scholar of theology but did not believe in a miracle even when she saw it with her own eyes. Margery is a mystic with no formal training in the Bible, yet she has a deep understanding of God.
“Okay, I’ll take care of it.”
I hear my husband say that several times a day.
But you will never hear me say those words.
Thanks, dear!
I know exactly what I want from Jesus when I get to heaven.
I want the voice of Barbra Streisand.
If we are going to spend eternity singing with the angels, hey, I don’t want to live with this voice for eternity.
I borrowed another Mary Russell book from Kimberly, and it took me awhile to read it.
O Jerusalem by Laurie King was intriguing, but it wasn’t a book I couldn’t put down. In fact, I put it down so many times that I couldn’t quite follow the plot.
King depicts Sherlock Holmes and his partner Mary Russell as Bristish spies. They are in Jerusalem to uncover a plot that was threatening war in British-occupied Palestine. Holmes faced torture and gruelling physical demands, unlike the genteel life of a Bristish detective on Baker Street.
This book gives a good idea of the turmoil in Jerusalem in the early 1900’s. The author is knowledgeable about the history and cultural traditions in that area, and particularly versed in Jewish beliefs.
There are still hints of the old Holmes in the book – his amazing observation and deduction skills. I enjoyed the book overall.
A white guy with the big afro hair in the 70’s…yes, that’s Keith Green.
I was a new Christian when I was first introduced to his music. His songs moved me to tears.
I love the way he sings the hymn Holy, Holy, Holy.
I spoke at a youth retreat years ago and at the end of my talk, I wanted to lead the group in a time of music and meditation.
“I don’t play the piano or the guitar,” I said. “But I do play the tape recorder.” (Those were the days before CDs). I proceeded to play a tape of How Majestic is Thy Name. It’s beautiful for meditation and worship.
Now you can listen to Keith Green on Rhapsody.com for free.
Notice some changes to my blog?
It’s not as feminine as my parenting site, not my usual pink look. But I still like the water drops picture on the banner, a picture of the roof my car while we were washing it. This picture depicts the theme of this blog – Stuff that Matters in Life. Here’s why:
For all except the first 6 years of my life I’ve lived in the suburbs. Washing a car in the suburbs is seemingly mundane and insignificant. But look at the water drops on the car. The properties of water are amazing. Water is essential for the survival of all known forms of life. Water droplets on a car are not insignificant. Neither is my life in the suburbs.
So here it is, “Stuff that Matters in Life” – my reflections of life in the suburbs.
Thanks, Elliot, for installing and spiffing up this new theme for me!
One of the shelves in the freezer compartment of my refrigerator broke.
I don’t even remember when we bought this refrigerator. We’ve had it for over 10 years, probably closer to 15.
People don’t need to buy a refrigerator very often.
If I had to shop for a refrigerator today, I am glad there are refrigerator reviews on the internet now. Instead of going to the store and asking the salesman, refrigerator reviews can answer all your questions. Plus, the salesman often does not know everything about every refrigerator.
Checking out refrigerator reviews before you buy also allows you to see all the new models out there. The latest sleek models are usually out of my price range, but it’s interesting to see how you can get a refrigerator style to match any kitchen decor.
Choose a good refrigerator and you won’t need to buy another one for 10-15 years.
I think we can hang on to our refrigerator for a few more years. We just propped up the broken shelf.
I wrote my first book review for RadiantLit.com
Here is my review of the Christian fiction MisMatch, by Erynn Mangum.
I don’t usually read Christian fiction. The last one I read was a Father Tim series in January, 2007.
Since I get a free book in payment for writing a review for RadiantLit, I choose a light book to read, something I wouldn’t normally buy myself.
Contact Jill at RadiantLit if you are interested in reading and reviewing Christian books for her site.

Fresh homemade crust with butter (special no calories or cholesterol butter for this one special pie), sweet strawberries on sale at Von’s, homemade glaze made with crushed fresh strawberries, no artificial flavors, a dab of real whipped cream (CoolWhip is yucky, not worth the calories).
Yes, we made it with our own hands. And the 4 of us ate it all in one sitting!
