Used car buying scam from “military” personnel

While shopping online on Craigslist.com for a used car for my son, I can across this ad:

2000 HONDA Accord EX V6
LEATHER SUNROOF 200 Horse Power V6 Automatic Transmission Naples Gold Metallic Exterior Soft Plush Leather Interior In Dash CD Radio Remote Entry …Perfect CarFax History…No accidents no damage no problems…

The price? $2960!

With 116k miles, that’s at least $2000 below Kelley Blue Book! I excitedly emailed the contact and asked to make an appointment to see it.

The response was this in its entirety (emphasis mine):

Can this be legit? I am hoping it is!

I sent a message back to “Sgt. Parra” and asked him whether the car will pass the smog check for California. I figured if it was really legit, someone else probably bought it already, but it’d be worth asking.

Then a couple of hours later, I get another email. I contacted another seller of another ad from Craigslist for a Camry that I thought was a good buy.

Here is the email response in its entirely (emphasis mine):

Hello,

The 2003 Toyota Camry is located in Farmington, CT and it is in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever. It has 44k miles and the VIN is: 4T1BE32K03U655388. It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. I have the pictures hosted on the net and you can see them at:

I am catching on now…

Both cars advertised at incredible prices at about $2,900, both seller’s names are Robert, both are willing to ship from out of the area for free, both are in the military, both use photobucket to post pictures …

Since I’ve been scouring Craigslist, Autotrader and dealerships for a car, I had sent out several emails. I forgot what I sent out.

So a couple of hours later, I got yet another response, for an Acura I asked about.

Now I am rolling on the floor laughing!

I googled this subject and found a forum discussion of someone who got this email, a friend of the Roberts, no doubt, and coincidentally also named Robert, with a cat and a wife who just joined him too! I put an excerpt here, but I’m sure you can figure out what the rest says:

I might have fallen for the first reply if the scammer would just be a little for creative in their approach.

Apparently, an epidemic of ads like this is on all kinds websites, including the sale of motorcycles, ATVs, jet skis, motor homes, trailers, and even farm equipment.

One member of the forum responded with this advice:

1. eBay does not “hold the money” until you are satisfied with the car. Once you pay them, that is it. And I suspect they will ask you to pay by Western Union.

2. The military does ship cars overseas for servicemen (why does this guy talk in pidgon english if he’s American, anyway?). But thet SHIP them, by SHIP, not by air. Total LIE.

3. American servicemen can drive their cars overseas without registering them there. Again total LIE. Why would a serviceman have a car shipped overseas if he could not register it?

The pattern is the same: a coveted item (BMW, Kobota Tractor, Honda motorcycle, etc.) worth $10,000 to $20,000 is offered for a pitiful amount – $2500 to $5000 with a long-winded “backstory” behind it. You wire them the money, thinking you scored big and that’s the last you hear of them.

They hijack eBay identifications by using those phishing scams. Typically if you look at their feedback, you’ll see it is some little old lady in Arkansas selling dolls. Suddenly, the person is a Seargent in the Army in England selling a car. What gives?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is….

  2. I checked out the same craigslist posting for the 2004 Camry 2 days ago and I just got same reply as everybody else. What a piece of work! I figured it was a scam right away, but was curious if there was anything about Mr Marty Tippins so I googled him and found this site.

    While it’s sad that this person(s) is out there trying to take advantage of people, my brother and I had a good laugh about it. Marty makes it sound like he can ship a car better than most people can travel by air. And the bit about a cat on carpet…talk about traction.

    Another thing I’ve noticed about car postings on Craigslist, is that you will see the exact same posting in several other cities. Try using http://www.crazedlist.org. It can do a search on Craigslist from several different cities at the same time.

  5. I got caught in this scam as well, until my brother helped me uncover it. I, too, was so taken aback by this offer I almost sent the money and was headed to the bank to take out a loan on this vehicle. Thank goodness for the internet. So many of these e-mails have all the same things in common as have been listed before. Military, need to sell bc of deployment soon, no scratches, dings, or.. etc. just read.

Having such a hard time trying to find a car to replace one that was destroyed in an accident that this seemed like a gift… but the wording and stilted writing made me think twice and the fact that the email was from a different email account than what I originally wrote to.

    Is the sunroof a power sunroof? Does it only popup or does it also retract?

    How does the paying for it with ebay work? I tried to find more information on the ebay website, but was unsure. Would you list the car on ebay, or is this a direct transaction? While the car is in transit who would be responsible for any damage or loss on the vehicle? How would I get a bill of sale and the title?

    As I said in my first email the car is currently located in Zagreb,Croatia.It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. Shipping will be done door-to-door, to your exact location, so you will not have to pick the car up yourself.

    I am very curious about when the DoD changed their regulations allowing the transportation of POVs on military aircraft. The change must have come about in the past 24 hours. I would appreciate it if you would sent me the regulation number, with page, para., & line number allowing you to ship a POV at taxpayer expense.

    You state that the car will be delivered to her door with 3-4 working days. How are you planning to manifest a POV that quickly and what is the port of entry? Who will be driving the car to the new owner’s address? You must have amazing connections. I’ve never seen anything manifested that quickly for a military aircraft.

    Also, I would like to have your full unit information. I will assume that a nonresponse from you will confirm that you are a scam artist, preying upon eBay buyers and I will infrom eBay of my conclusions.

  7. I had a similar experience as Jane. “Maria Hinshaw” is trying to sell a Prius on Colorado Spring’s Craig’s list fot $4800, about $20,000 under blue book value. Quite a bit less that she was asking from Jane. Her reason is that she is going through a divorce and wants to get rid of everything that reminds her of her husband. The funny thing is that the ad was written by a man. He says it is his wife’s car and they are moving and only need one car. A web search of her name, which she used to sign the email, brought me to this site. Thank you all for sharing your stories to help protect others from this scam. Is there a way to effectively turn these people into ebay or Craig’s List if there hasn’t actually been a scam?

    We definitely have a problem here because I’m no longer in Cali. I am a Marine pilot and last Friday I was transferred to Mayport Station in Florida for final instructions because of our deployment to Iraq in September. I know the long distance is certainly a problem but I have a solution in case you still wanna buy it, we have a ’95 GMC heavy duty truck here with a flatbed trailer and I can use it to ship the car to your address at no cost. If you do not accept, you can chose any other shipping company such as DAS AUTO SHIPPERS but they have a very big fee for such a transport and it will cost you more than $800 so, our GMC will do the job even if it’s not so fast but…it’s free. This car is very nice, it has comfortable seats and very stable at high speeds. I did a preventative maintenance at 70k miles and was done including replacing the timing belt, water pump, battery, new tires and brakes. This car is very reliable running on snowy/icy/rainy/sandy road condition and you’ll be very pleased with it.

  42. We are currently having the same problem in Canada. My son almost got caught by these scam artisits yestetrday. Thank goodness for the representative at our Western Union Office. She advised us to double check with EBAY as there have been a lot of scams between Canada and the UK using the EBAY and Western Union brandnames recently.

  45. So, here we are on November 14th and this scammer is still going strong. Same post from a Sgt. in Italy whose 2003 Toyota Camry “runs like a cat on carpet” for $2900. Made an inquiry as to why the car was so inexpensive and where it was located. We even got as far as checking the VIN with Car Fax for the Toyota last night. It was sold at auction in Florida in September. Yes, we checked with the Western Union to see their policy on transmitting funds and checked Ebay’s policy on purchasing cars. This guy even had an Ebay email address in his response. Anyway, when we finally went to the Internet and checked the phone number that he gave us in order for us to send the money to him through Western Union, we found this site.

    So we wasted $30 on the CarFax…but better that than wasting the $2900 on the shameful waste of human life that runs this scam. Contacted police, local news station, local car dealers, and all my friends. Thank you for posting this information….I wonder whether the scammer reads this post periodically to see how well he’s doing…to see how many almost bought his scam. I hope he reads this.

    I believe all the negative energy this “guy” is accumulating through his evil deeds will catch up with him. I believe he will get caught…maybe not by the police or other law enforcement agencies….but by karma, fate, or a higher justice…whatever word you want! He obviously already has bad karma if he feels the need to obtain a livelihood through thievery. I actually feel sorry for him. Negative, negative, energy.

  46. Oh Boy! I truely thought that I was smarter than this, and is the reason that I do not put any information into the computer such as credit card #’s, etc.

    We went to Western Union and sent the money. However, when I returned home we went straight to the computer and looked up the Craigslist ad, it was flagged for removal. We thought that was very odd that it was being removed so quickly, so we looked up his name and found a couple of different sites such as this one. The name today is Sgt. Mark Loranty and here is what he wrote to us……well, just read the above blogs and you know what he wrote. This was for a 2003 Honda Accord EX. We were supposed to use Western Union – eBay Safe Harbor, send it to the eBay agent name of Amysa Troxel. We contacted Western Union immediately to cancel the transaction. I did lose $125 for the Western Union transaction, but it is better than $2,500 in this bad economy. While searching back to the ad for the car we ALMOST purchased, and seeing that the ad was flagged for removal, we noticed a new ad with the same “tone” for a Honda Accord, this one gold in color. Something that I noticed in the pictures of the cars was that there is no license plates on them. I have purchased cars from Craigslist before and never had a problem, which is why I wasn’t so nervous about this. Sooooooooooooooo glad that something told us to check this out, almost too late. The only problem is that HE HAS OUR NAME AND ADDRESS. WHY DIDN’T I JUST OFFER MY SOCIAL SECURITY # WHILE I WAS AT IT?

  49. I got an email too. From a Sgt. Peter J. Loranty, selling a beautiful white 2003 honda accord for a measly $2, 980. The car seemed great and perfect. I sent the guy an email asking a few questions about the car, and he sends back a large response barely touching upon my questions. I knew it was a scam when he sent that he was “located in the UK to improve the military relationships between the US and the UK” and what person ships a whole car over seas without checking if it can be registered? come on! I am a just turned 17 year old, looking for her first car, and even I knew it was a scam…

    It sounded too good to be true, sigh, I better keep looking….
