I sent a message back to “Sgt. Parra” and asked him whether the car will pass the smog check for California. I figured if it was really legit, someone else probably bought it already, but it’d be worth asking.
Then a couple of hours later, I get another email. I contacted another seller of another ad from Craigslist for a Camry that I thought was a good buy.

Since I’ve been scouring Craigslist, Autotrader and dealerships for a car, I had sent out several emails. I forgot what I sent out.
So a couple of hours later, I got yet another response, for an Acura I asked about.
Now I am rolling on the floor laughing!

I might have fallen for the first reply if the scammer would just be a little for creative in their approach.
Apparently, an epidemic of ads like this is on all kinds websites, including the sale of motorcycles, ATVs, jet skis, motor homes, trailers, and even farm equipment.
One member of the forum responded with this advice:
1. eBay does not “hold the money” until you are satisfied with the car. Once you pay them, that is it. And I suspect they will ask you to pay by Western Union.
2. The military does ship cars overseas for servicemen (why does this guy talk in pidgon english if he’s American, anyway?). But thet SHIP them, by SHIP, not by air. Total LIE.
3. American servicemen can drive their cars overseas without registering them there. Again total LIE. Why would a serviceman have a car shipped overseas if he could not register it?
The pattern is the same: a coveted item (BMW, Kobota Tractor, Honda motorcycle, etc.) worth $10,000 to $20,000 is offered for a pitiful amount – $2500 to $5000 with a long-winded “backstory” behind it. You wire them the money, thinking you scored big and that’s the last you hear of them.
They hijack eBay identifications by using those phishing scams. Typically if you look at their feedback, you’ll see it is some little old lady in Arkansas selling dolls. Suddenly, the person is a Seargent in the Army in England selling a car. What gives?
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is….

I did a bit of research on this scam when I first discovered it a few months ago. It appears to me to be originating out of Texas, probably someone who works at a car dealership and has access to these vehicles to take the pics and post them. Maybe someone in Texas can do some additional research and help the authorities catch this guy. If you recognize the background in some of the pics, you should be able to narrow it down from there. I beleive it was either the Houston or Dallas area I had narrowed it down to, but not sure which one now.

i’m sure the FBI or officials in that nature can catch these people. they can trace anything coming from anybody. the thing is we probably havent made it such a big deal yet…or maybe theres too many to catch…i dont know. but i sure do wish they get caught!

I replied, asking sgt SCAMMER to send me his own details instead and he has since not responded to me… But I intend to send him fake details if he does not respond to my mails at the end of today!

At first I thought some dealers must be involved but it’s 100% cut and clip. The scammers do use dealers software that ables them to do mass listing, inserting and removing quickly. I did contact some dealers that were easy targets and a few of them are trying to help by water marking pictures or removing as soon as sold. Some of the cars the scammers are using are from ads that are years old. You may want to do as I have and contact these dealers let them know they are easy targets and ask them to help by water marking and adding security so they can’t be cut and clipped. The ones I contacted where very willing to protect their name and do some of these things. Good luck!

Thank you all for posting on this subject. We (my husband, my BANKER, and I) almost fell for it. Within our emails I kept asking him (Lt. Jack Craighton) to call me. He hasn’t yet. I asked for VIN #, which I received, purchased a CarFax on it. Everything on the CarFax rang true. I found a website that you can check if a vehicle has been stolen by VIN#, not reported stolen. We almost fell for it hard… until I found these postings. The really sick difference with this guy is that his excuse for selling so cheap and quick was he was being deployed to Iraq. My husband served in the Navy durring Desert Storm and felt like he had been slapped in the face and spat on! Surely there has to be someone we can report this to (FBI?) that can use their brains, that are much bigger than mine, to catch the people behind this. I would also like to take the opportunity to say how much I appreciate all that the military personel do to keep us safe and insure our freedom, both at home and abroad, and how sorry I am that someone is using their selfless dedication and heroisim to line their scummy pockets! Shame on them!
This is definitely a scam and I’m glad people post it up to warn others. Because I have personally dealt with a “sargeant” as well. With the same stories and how he was in the UK. These scammers are just making a mockery of our soldiers.

First I have to say I’m disappointed in finding how long theses scams have been going on. I received 2 identical emails to responses I sent on cars I found on craigslist. I deleted the first email after reading it, it just sounded to suspicious. That was about a week ago. Then today I received the second ‘identical’ email as the first from a different person and car. I was shocked to say the least. I started researching and sure enough its a scam. I will post the second emial below. I’m really frustrated now, cause I have no idea now if an add is legit or not and I REALLY NEED A CAR!!! I suppose I should be glad I didn’t loose my money.
Here’s the letter, lets hope this scam gets enough attention so others wont waste thier time like I have.

Almost same exact wording for my transaction. Seller in crotia, just moved there and get get the car registered there. 1957 Chevy Convertable. $16000 USD includes shipping etc. Seller wants to use ebay protection, oh buy the way do you know that ebay does not accept or make payments, it’s all done though third party like paypal etc, they have an escrow option though escrow.com. I told the seller this is the option I wanted to use, I already knew this was a scam just wanted to play along to see how far it would go. I told the seller thats all I need was his info to setup the escrow, once I got his info I would setup the escrow, once I recieved the vehicle and inspected it. I would contact escorw with a pre estabilshed confirmation number and the funds would be relaesd,. Well not to my surprize he e-mailed me back and said to bad for me he found another (SUCKER) I mean buyer that agreed to his conditions.

I have had two experiences. One was when I was interested in buying one of these “fanstastic deals” and then the car ended up being overseas. When it sounded too fishy,again what soldier is going to sign an e-mail best regards? I told him I have friends in London, just send me the address and I’ll Western Union them the cash. Never heard from him. Then the next one was great. We had a classic car for sale and got an e-mail offering us $5000 more than we were asking, that it was very collectible in London! (That tipped us off) Anyway the guy asked for the address and sent a pretty good photocopy of a Chase cashier’s check. So we decided to play with the guy. Told him that it arrived on Friday afternoon so we deposited it into our account and he figured it went through. Then we said we had to go out of town for a couple of days, but where should we send this extra money, seeing that the check was in the account it should be good, right? He got all excited, he even went as far as to send us phone numbers of the 3 people he wanted me to Western Union this $5000 to. Turns out they were disposable cell phones in Spain. The check was sent from Holland, no return address. Anyway the guy started getting really angry on Monday and sent us some nasty e-mails, so on Wednesday I answered him and said good thing we didn’t send him the money because it was a fake check, and that we turned it over to the authorities for testing, and that he would burn in hell, etc. Never heard from him again! If it sounds too good to be true, it is!
LOL. Similar experience with selling a dining room set. The “buyer” wanted to give me $1500k over my price. I told him to send it, I kept it as a souvenir.

I am waiting for a house to close so I have the funds for a car purchase, so to hold him off (while I researched) I mentioned that I would have to wait for the closing to have the funds in an account that would be accessable. I emailed my brother-in-law who is a former Army service-person and he mentioned hearing of scams out of the UK. I asked him for the typical amount the servicemen spend if they ship vehicles overseas. He said its around 1,200.00 if its a 30-40 foot cargo container and they also pay taxes and customs. Typically they don’t have a need for their own personal cars anyway.
This vehicle is KBB valued at $24,000 he asked for $4890. Can’t they even get close to reality???? Also, this VIN goes to a 2006 Eddie Bauer Expedition (not a King Ranch) with 13 reports. I’ve never seen a 2006 with that many reports to go along with it. I flagged the listing and reported it to Denver PD as it was on the Denver, CO car listings. Hopefully no one will fall for this one.

A couple problems with the email I got. 1. There is no military base in Billings, MT. 2. The asking price is $3000 less than a dealer trade in amount. 3. The ebay buyer protection program is real, but the car must be purchased through EBAY. 4. They never answer any questions I hava about the car.
I send him an address (FBI office in Kansas City), they sent me a very official email from a URL that was created 10 days ago.
It asked to fax a copy of the Money Gram to this fax number 206-339-6066. I googled that number and this is how I found this site.

Another question…I know that eBay doesn’t have the ability to “hold funds”. Besides, any coorespondence for them to know that I have satisfied with the car, will come from me. So what’s to stop me from keeping the car, and never letting eBay know to release you funds? But as we’ve already discussed, eBay doesn’t hold funds. So once I complete that transaction with eBay, you’ll already have the money….long before I get the car.
I also checked for a listing on this same car on eBay. Just to see. There isnt one. And there is no registered user on eBay with your e-mail address. I know people tend to have many e-mail addresses, but for the pure validity of this transaction, why wouldn’t you?
Please, if you can, ease my worries. If you can’t, and this is indeed the scam I’ve researcher about; well then, you lost “this” sucker. ))
A tad abrasive in some parts, maybe….but I needed to be clear. Guess what!! Right after I hit the ‘send’ button, I get a “MAILER-DEAMON” e-mail telling me the e-mail address has been cancelled. GO FIG!! Thank goodness I hadn’t started any transfer of funds yet!! Thank you again….SO much!
One more quick thing, @Judie Pokakaa; the verbage in my emails was EXACTLY like yours!! TO THE ‘T’!!!!
I think it’s safe to say thats the “new and improved” verbage this guy is using. BEWARE buyers!!! Watch your back, and do your homework…I’m glad I did!
