Used car buying scam from “military” personnel

While shopping online on Craigslist.com for a used car for my son, I can across this ad:

2000 HONDA Accord EX V6
LEATHER SUNROOF 200 Horse Power V6 Automatic Transmission Naples Gold Metallic Exterior Soft Plush Leather Interior In Dash CD Radio Remote Entry …Perfect CarFax History…No accidents no damage no problems…

The price? $2960!

With 116k miles, that’s at least $2000 below Kelley Blue Book! I excitedly emailed the contact and asked to make an appointment to see it.

The response was this in its entirety (emphasis mine):

Hello and sorry for my delay,

I’m Sgt. Robert Parra. This Honda is in perfect working condition. This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. No electrical problems on this beauty. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior looks like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 118k highway miles. VIN Number: 1hgcg1655ya068349

It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones. The body and paint are great. The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet.

Here are the pics of the car :

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it(for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you will don`t be satisfied about the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back.

I am located in London, United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and UK. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in US because we can’t register it here; it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take for ever. My final price on it is US 2,960 $. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 3 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.

Best Regards,
Robert Parra

Can this be legit? I am hoping it is!

I sent a message back to “Sgt. Parra” and asked him whether the car will pass the smog check for California. I figured if it was really legit, someone else probably bought it already, but it’d be worth asking.

Then a couple of hours later, I get another email. I contacted another seller of another ad from Craigslist for a Camry that I thought was a good buy.

Here is the email response in its entirely (emphasis mine):

Hello,

The 2003 Toyota Camry is located in Farmington, CT and it is in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever. It has 44k miles and the VIN is: 4T1BE32K03U655388. It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. I have the pictures hosted on the net and you can see them at:
http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/RobertBright/

The price is $2,900 including shipping costs anywhere in the continental US. There are no other costs regarding this transaction.
The transaction will be closed only through a 3rd party and this way we will both be protected.

My time is limited due to my job in the army so I decided to use a service from Worldpay. To begin the transaction I’ll need your full name and shipping address. I will forward the details of our transaction to Worldpay and then you will receive an invoice from them. The car will be shipped insured to your location with DAS and you will have 5 days for inspection.

Best regards,
Robert Bright.

I am catching on now…

Both cars advertised at incredible prices at about $2,900, both seller’s names are Robert, both are willing to ship from out of the area for free, both are in the military, both use photobucket to post pictures …

Since I’ve been scouring Craigslist, Autotrader and dealerships for a car, I had sent out several emails. I forgot what I sent out.

So a couple of hours later, I got yet another response, for an Acura I asked about.

Now I am rolling on the floor laughing!

Here’s an excerpt:

Hello and sorry for my delay,

Yes, I know, you are busy in the military, right?

The 1999 Acura TL is in perfect working condition. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line….It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones…The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet

You must’ve been talking to Sgt. Robert Parra! Both of you have a cat! And do you also have a wife who doesn’t check ahead of time if a foreign car can be registered in the UK?

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program…I am located in London,United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and Serbia. One months ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can’t register it here…It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. …

It’s Serbia now, very nice.

Best Regards,
Michael Parker

At least they are getting a little more creative with the name.

I googled this subject and found a forum discussion of someone who got this email, a friend of the Roberts, no doubt, and coincidentally also named Robert, with a cat and a wife who just joined him too! I put an excerpt here, but I’m sure you can figure out what the rest says:

Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2007 18:22:47
Subject: 2001 Honda Accord

Hello and sorry for my delay,
The 2001 Honda Accord is in perfect working condition. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line…blah, blah, blah…

It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones…mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet….

I signed up for US military forces and I was sent here with my department to improve the military relations between our country and UK….blah, blah, blah…

Sgt Robert Mclean

I might have fallen for the first reply if the scammer would just be a little for creative in their approach.

Apparently, an epidemic of ads like this is on all kinds websites, including the sale of motorcycles, ATVs, jet skis, motor homes, trailers, and even farm equipment.

One member of the forum responded with this advice:

1. eBay does not “hold the money” until you are satisfied with the car. Once you pay them, that is it. And I suspect they will ask you to pay by Western Union.

2. The military does ship cars overseas for servicemen (why does this guy talk in pidgon english if he’s American, anyway?). But thet SHIP them, by SHIP, not by air. Total LIE.

3. American servicemen can drive their cars overseas without registering them there. Again total LIE. Why would a serviceman have a car shipped overseas if he could not register it?

The pattern is the same: a coveted item (BMW, Kobota Tractor, Honda motorcycle, etc.) worth $10,000 to $20,000 is offered for a pitiful amount – $2500 to $5000 with a long-winded “backstory” behind it. You wire them the money, thinking you scored big and that’s the last you hear of them.

They hijack eBay identifications by using those phishing scams. Typically if you look at their feedback, you’ll see it is some little old lady in Arkansas selling dolls. Suddenly, the person is a Seargent in the Army in England selling a car. What gives?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is….

    Hi,

This suv has only 76,400 miles, used just to cruise. No accident history, clear title, no dents or dings and no scratches.

I have a low price ($2000), because I want to sell it before 12 December.

  2. Hey ya’ll! In Dallas There’s an ad for a 1995 Toyota t100 for $ 1,000, it’s being offered by a Air Force sergeant soon to be deployed to Syria, with the added urgency to sell due to sad memories this truck brings: it belonged to the sergeant’s sister who just passed. That’s why it’s so cheap and at the same time so urgent to sell, like, send me the money to-day. SMH. The ad looks legit, with only one photo, but the email response has a link to photos in use.com, and has all the spiel and the WOW! photos and details: 4×4, runs like Usain Bolt, never in a collision, not even a minor one, like a dream come true. I pray no one falls for it and loses their hard-earned dollars.

  3. Eva Mitchell who claims to be a military doctor had the same story. She moved to Las Vegas after her husband died of a heart attack. But the car is in Connecticut and she will pay shipping. She wants $2000 for a 2010 Honda etc. which perfect just like all the others.

  4. Hello ,

The vehicle will arrive at your address in 48hrs so my presence it’s not necessary cause I have everything arranged with Amazon . You will have 5 days testing period before I receive any money and if by any reason you find something you don’t like about, you can send it back on my expense and you will receive a full refund of your money. It is located in Omaha, NE. The title is clean and free of any loans or liens!

The travel trailer is a 2005 Keystone Outback Sydney 31 RQS (33 feet, one slide out, 1 inside bath, 9 spaces to sleep) in perfect condition, never implicated in any accident, with no body damage or rust and fully loaded, ready to be lived in. The title is clear on my name. The travel trailer is equipped with furnace, microwave, refrigerator, stove. stove top burner, water heater, electrical, air conditioning, auxiliary battery converter, equipment AM/FM/CDLP detector, TV, antenna, exterior awning, external shower, screen door skylight and much more…I’ll wait your email back if you are interested in buying my trailer, best regards!

    second e mail

Like I said, at this moment I’m serving in Offutt AFB, a Air Force military base near Omaha, Nebraska. Now I’m on duty, I do a special training program each day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or call whenever I want. I have the travel trailer here with me. I advertised it on many states to get more exposure and sell it faster. The reason I’m selling this travel trailer way below market value is because I don’t have time for negotiations and I need money before February 05th for my next house in Anchorage. The delivery process will be managed by me, I have made all the arrangements and the travel trailer is already in our Military Logistic department custody, sealed and prepared to be shipped. I think I can have it there at your home address within 2-3 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing period after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can move forward with this transaction. Here you have pictures: http://imgur.com/a/pQf0V

  9. Dealing with Sarah Overby.. Saw an ad for a motor home on Craigs List in New Hampshire…..she said she had to sell it by Feb 10th (I think it was the 10th)…..$2,500….beautiful condition. I inquired asking to see more pictures….asked about leaks and where she was located. She did send pictures but didn’t give her location….although said it would be ‘delivered’. Really??? I wrote back and said I was interested and again asked if there was any leaks and where she lived…..hoping to go see it. I didn’t hear anything for a couple days and just now got an e-mail from her and it started out ‘Sorry about the delay” which I see in some of these other letters here too! She then said she is at Minot AFB in N.D. getting ready to be shipped out to Syria. The motor home is in storage at Amazon warehouse. Like many of the other letters I just read….she wanted my name, address and phone number telling me once she got that the motor home would be sent to me and I had 7 days to inspect it and then if I wanted it I guess I somehow paid Amazon….etc., etc., etc. Obviously a scam!!

  10. Rebecca Edwards Now…

    Hello ,

First of all I want to thank you for your interest in my 2009 Honda Accord EX-L V6 3.5L. The car has been extremely well maintained with a full service history, it only has 48,196 miles! Transmission is automatic. The vehicle has all of its original floor mats, all books, complete set of tools and keys. Everything works in the car lights, gauges, radio, windows, locks, a/c blows ice cold, etc. It has no leaks or drips and does not smoke at all, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions with a clear title free of liens. It has new Goodyear tires.

I bought it when I was serving in U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Havelock, NC and now I am deployed in Denver, CO. The car will be delivered from here, it is stored in a military compound.

I have dropped my price to $3,000 (purchase price) including delivery and handling to your address, since this is an urgent sale, it will be delivered free of charge through a military transportation service to a designated location of your choice, average delivery time is 2-3 business days, depending on destination. It has been reduced because I need to find a buyer before my upcoming deployment take place and I don’t want to waste more time negotiating.

If you’re interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner please email me your: full name, shipping address and phone number, to open a case with eBay Motors. They will contact you to explain the entire procedure. The financial part will be managed by them, which means that you will have a 5 days inspection period before committing to buy the car. Using eBay Motors service we are both 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.

To support my argument regarding the condition of the car please visit the following photo album: http://s44.photobucket.com/user/V6-2009-Honda-Accord-EX-L/library/

  11. Buyers beware…same thing happening on Facebook via Marketplace now. Location of post was local but then when “Laura Jones” who is also in military I was infr9med Suv is in Nebraska. I started getting skeptical when the name in Facebook didn’t match the name who replied. Then I picked up on grammatical errors. Thank you for this blog.

  12. I almost fell victim to this same scam. See below:
Thank you for being interested in buying my 2007 Acura MDX SPORT. My name is Amanda Hubert. My car is in great shape, no engine problems, damages, hidden defects, never abused. It was always garaged and never smoked in. It has a 3.7 V6 engine, automatic transmission, 93,000 miles. Black exterior paint are great, no scratches and no dents; the interior is Black and clean; it has never been involved in accidents; no liens or loans; the title is clear. My last price is $2,000 (no payments; no trades). I bought the car when I was serving in Langley Air Force Base, VA but I was promoted and transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska for a 3 years period and don’t want to store it. Hate to sell it but I do not want to let it destroy my backyard, beside this it’s not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees. Therefore I need a fast and reliable buyer, so if you have the money ready to buy it email me back.

I look forward to hearing from you,
    SSgt. Amanda Hubert

  13. There is someone named Rebecca Wilson whose is scamming ppl including a family member of mine into buying cars and USING EBAY logos to help fuel their scam.

I would think EBAY would want to look into someone misrepresenting their brand and causing FRAUD but EBAY seems like they don’t give a damn.

My family member who just had a child and needed a car to help her with her new family was scammed out of 1,500 dollars because of people with NO morals who prays on people who are vulnerable. Im a big believer in KARMA and I know it will come back around I just want other people out there to be AWARE of these scams by unscrupulous individuals.

  14. Wish I saw this before…Got me out of over 1000! I didn’t think to look into the deal because I’m military personnel as well and the rank the seller posed was superior over my own. I have only been in a year. I thought hey this cool sergeant…got me…smh…I DEFINATELY learned my lesson!

  15. I received two separate emails from two individuals;different cars that I inquired about but the emails were identical. Natasha.marks@0076 and smithjody323 both gmail accounts. There has not been a response since I confronted them both:
Thank you for being interested in buying my 2010 Nissan Maxima S/SV. Let me give you a few details about it: 3.5L V6, 57K miles. It has been serviced regularly, no rust, everything works as it should and the title is clear. No electrical or mechanical problems, damages or hidden defects. Hasn’t been involved in any accident, non smoker,no pets. Mint condition.I bought the car when I was stationed at McConnell AFB, KS.
At the moment I’m stationed at Minot Air Force Base, ND but I’ll be leaving to Syria therefore it’s not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees. The deal includes free delivery as you may know we can ship a car/bike/etc from home to the base and back one time in a year for free. I advertised it on other states also to get more exposure and sell it faster. The car will be delivered from Minot Air Force Base, ND by the Logistic Department. It is available for immediate delivery free of charge at your door, the shipping process takes 3-4 days. I’m looking for a quick sale, that’s why the price has been reduced to $1,900, to avoid wasting time with negotiations.

  16. Just wanted to share — same scan for a Teresa Brown.

Thanks for replying to my ad. I’m selling it because I’m serving in Offutt AFB, Nebraska but I was promoted and transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska for a 3 years period, so I don’t need it anymore at this time. Let me give you a few details about it: 2005 Nissan Armada SE has only 94,530 miles on it, no accident history, clear title, no dents or dings and no scratches. Always adult driven and garaged, never abused or raced. If you are interested, it’s still available for sale and the final price is $2500 .

    Engine – 5.6 L V8
    Fuel type – Gasoline

Second email — after I emailed asking about why I was seeing the listing on multiple cities with different odometer listings and different prices. Needless to say, I googled and found this site — confirming my suspicions that it was indeed too good to be true. Wanted to share my experience so others would be aware.

    Second email text here:

As I’ve told you, at this moment I am in Offutt AFB, Nebraska I do a special training program each day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or call whenever I want.I am only allowed to check my email several time a day. Hope you can understand. The reason I’m selling this Armada way below market value is because don’t have time for negotiations and I need money before March 27th for my next house in Anchorage. The Armada is already at our Offutt Air Force Base Library form Offutt AFB, NE ready to go to my new buyer address. The delivery of the Armada will be managed by me.

  17. Just a follow up — her email is [email protected]. She sent me a link with pics of the car, but I didn’t open it and I don’t want to include it here just in case it is a virus.

  18. NOW THEY ARE CHANGING THE WAY THEY DO IT LOL

    Hello,

My 2004 Lexus RX330 is still for sale. It has 96,000 miles.Auto, clear title. The price was reduced at $1000 as I need to sell it before March 31st, when I’ll be leaving with my unit Brigade Combat Team back to South Korea replacing the troops scheduled to come home. The deal includes free delivery as you may know we can ship a car/bike/etc from home to the base and back one time in a year for free. The vehicle will arrive at your address in 2 days so my presence it’s not necessary cause I have everything arranged with Amazon . You will have 5 days testing period before I receive any money and if by any reason you find something you don’t like about, you can send it back on my expense and you will receive a full refund of your money. It is located in Omaha,NE

If you’re interested in purchasing it, all I need from you is your full name, phone# and shipping address and Amazon will contact you shortly after I forward them your contact details. For more pictures pls click to link: imgur.com/a/kdmkq

  19. If you come across gloria clifton ([email protected]) it is a Craigslist SCAM as well.

Same thing, first you contact them and you get a story back about being in the Military. When I asked about seeing the car, I got the story about Ebay seller and 7 day free inspection time. As always, if the deal seems to good to be true, then most likely it is not.

  20. My husband and I saw a craigs list for a ranger, and we had been looking for one. We sent e-mail to [email protected] as requested in the Craigs List posting, and received the following:

    Sincerely,

I stupidly sent an e-mail letting her know that we were interested, and received the following reply with many photos

    Hi again,
As I’ve told you, at this moment I am in Offutt AFB, Nebraska in a military base, the machine is here with me. I do a special training program each day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or call whenever I want. The machine is already at our Offutt AFB near Omaha, NE sealed and ready to go. Like I already said, the delivery process will be managed by me.

    Thanks and God Bless you,
    SSgt. USAF Mary Bertrand

  21. Thank Goodness, we browsed for USAF Mary Bertrand, and saw this scam; so we will not be sending any further communications that direction.

  22. Thank you for publishing this. I am glad I checked. Came very close to buying a 2001 Jeep from one of our military personnel until I read this. Thanks again

  23. I came across a jeep on a FB ad that I responded to and got the same type of email back…Sargent in the military, Ebay buyer protection program, 7 day inspection time, etc. My wife said it “felt like a scam” and googled the name of the Sargent and got this forum. If it sounds too good to be true…it is.

  24. An ad appeared in my local newspaper offering a 2008 Honda accord EX-L with 57K on the odometer. The only contact was an e mail address [email protected]..I responded and a First Lieutenant Christopher Abbott USAF replied with similar comments. He told me he was selling the car as a part of a divorce settlement. He went on to say that he had been deployed to the UK and was assigned to the RAF at Alcombury UK. And he left the car at his former AF base. The former base was Buckley AFB in Colorado. And that the Airforce would ship the car to the closest AFB to my home. Then he would have it shipped to my home from there.
I contacted the public affairs officer at Buckley AFB and was informed this was a scam.

I also checked Amazon for the machine and seller – nothing, googled the name and this page came up. I guess if your gut says its too good to be true then it usually is.

  26. Thank you for posting. My 80 year old dad almost fell for this and I felt something was funny, so I checked it out online and your page came up. The letter I received is below.

    Hello,

The engine 2.4 L VVT-i DOHC 16V l4 FWD runs very good and the automatic transmission shifts perfectly. Has a clean and clear title in my name and there are no liens or loans on it. This car was used by my husband who died 4 month ago. The price was reduced at $2,000 because I’m in a hurry to find a buyer. I need to sell the car before the 13th of this month, when I will be leaving on military duty with my medical team out of the country for a year and do not want to store my car. Hate to sell it but its not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees for a year.
My Camry right now is located at our military base in Cavalier, ND, stored with all the papers and is ready to be shipped.
As I’ve told you, I’m in the army with my military medical team and right now I am in a military base. We are training, getting ready for leaving the country. Before leaving I had prearranged the deal with eBay services so my presence isn’t necessary. The delivery process will be managed by me. I think I can have it there at your home address within 2-3 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. You will have 5 days to test and inspect the car prior to make any purchase. During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. To support my argument regarding the condition of the Camry, I’ve attached more pictures to this email.

    Have a great day,

  27. They’re doing this on FB Marketplace now too. I saw a 2009 Nissan Murano, mint condition being sold for $2K.

When I messaged the person, they said they were posting it for a family member and gave the email address: [email protected]

Of course “she” emails me back with some story about being deployed and wanting to sell it asap. The email had some poor grammar (improper verb tense, etc). Then asks for my full legal name, address and phone number. So I provided the phone number and address for the police headquarters. I gave my full legal name as “Denise Imnotani Diot” Haha.

She’s telling me Facebook Marketplace will send me an email about the details regarding payment etc. Really?? Okay, I’m patiently waiting. Please don’t misspell my name.

  28. He’s still at it, posted via Facebook Marketplace, selling a $10,000 Maxima for only $3000.

    Hi,

Thank you for your interest in my 2009 Nissan Maxima SV. Let me give you a few details about it: 40,559 miles. The paint is in great shape and condition, no dings are visible on it. The interior and exterior were well maintained and are extra clean. The engine is functioning properly and has no issues. The transmission shifts very smoothly. The brakes and the battery are in great condition. One owner, non smoker, I own a clean title under my name, no accidents, loans or liens on it.
The price was reduced to $3,000 as I need to sell it until the 30th of June, when I will be deployed with my Wing to Syria. If you have any other questions or need more info, please feel free to ask.

  33. My 17 year old daughter nearly fell for this today. The car was being “sold” by a woman because it was “too painful” for her to look at the car. It had belonged to her son who died a few months ago. The car was currently being stored in Farmington, MO at the eBay Motors Storage. The original listing price of the vehicle was $5000. My daughter contacted her to get more info about the vehicle and was told that the owner, Debra Jones, would lower the price to $1,500 so that my daughter could afford to buy it immediately.

The next vehicle was a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. Craigslist… I did a reverse image search and found the EXACT same truck being sold in Wyoming, Washington, New York, and California. EXACT to the description, cost, mileage, and photos. A truck that regularly costs around $7,000 is being sold for $2,000.

I feel so awful for people. The people who fall for these scams are usually elderly people who aren’t internet savvy or younger people who don’t know any better. No one who is shopping for a car on eBay can afford to fall for a scam like these.

  34. I found this advertisement on OfferUp. It’s an online shopping app. I live in Arizona & this happened last night. July 23 2017. The ad was deleted after several minutes. The deal was to good to be true. I did some research & I came across this forum. Thank you!

Then his reply to my request for test drive:
    Hi again,

Right now I’m at Minot AFB in North Dakota, doing a special training and getting ready for my deployment to Syria. The car is already at the Ebay warehouse, here in Minot, sealed and ready to be delivered to your place in 3- 4 days. The transaction will be done ONLY through Ebay. They will handle the shipping, the payment and the paper exchange. By dealing through Ebay, we are both covered 100% and nothing wrong can happen with my car or your money. You will benefit of free delivery (3 days top) and a 7 day period to test, inspect and accept the vehicle. In order for both of us to be covered you will not release the funds to Ebay until you inspect and accept the Nissan.
If you’re interested, please reply with your full name, shipping address and the best phone number where you can be reached. I will forward your details to Ebay and they will contact you with more info on how to purchase it and how to make the payment.

I then told him I am flying up to Ruthville ND to visit family and can look at the car. He hasn’t responded back and the ad is gone from FB. Imagine that!

  37. I was a victim of stupidity as well. The big red flags on this car scam were the total lack of military knowledge. No Staff Sergeant in the Air Force deploys with the Coat Guard aboard a Navy destroyer. I recognized this scam from several years ago and just reiterate that if it sounds too good to be true then it is. The same entity is still trying to scam folks on Gorge Net where this ad was until it was taken down the same day.

    Hello again Mark,

I drove the truck when I was serving in Auburn, CA at Air Force Base Auburn. Last week I was deployed to Florida at Jacksonville USCG Hitron Coast Guard Station, we are making final preparations before deploying to South China Sea at USS Dewey for a year and do not want to store the truck because there is no one to drive it. The truck is currently stored in our military compound in Auburn, CA and it will be delivered from there through our military movers company. We can deliver our privately owned vehicle one time in a year for free. The delivery takes 2-3 days and all necessary paperwork required for registration will be provided along with the truck.

The price I’m asking for the truck is $1,500 and the reason I’m selling it way below market value is because my deployment take place in two weeks and I don’t have time for negotiations. The financial part will be managed by eBay and you will have a 15 days inspection period before committing to buy the truck. Using eBay services we are both 100% covered during the steps of this transaction. They will hold your money until you get the truck and I get paid only after the inspection period of 15 days ends (if you decide to keep the truck). If for any reason you decide not to keep it, eBay will send you a full refund in a few hours and shipping back will be my concern.

If you are serious about buying my truck, please send me your full name, shipping address and phone # and I’ll get everything started with eBay. They will contact you right away with all the details of the transaction and will explain better the entire procedure.
    Thank you and God Bless!

  38. Another one, from today
    Hello,

    My name is Annette, My

1999 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner V6 is still for sale. It has 132,220 miles and automatic transmission. Never had or need any paint/body work done, garaged keep always, without any mechanical problems, tires and wheels are in great shape as well, electric is working perfectly. The engine V6 3.4L DOHC 4×4 runs very good and the automatic transmission shifts perfectly. Has a clean and clear title in my name and there are no liens or loans on it. This truck was used by my husband who died 4 months ago.
The price was reduced at $2,000 because I’m in a hurry to find a buyer. I need to sell the truck before the 5th of the next month, when I will be leaving on military duty with my medical team out of the country for a year and do not want to store my truck. Hate to sell it but its not worth keeping insurance and paying storage fees for a year.
My truck right now is located at our military base in Cavalier, ND, stored with all the papers and is ready to be shipped.
As I’ve told you, I’m in the army with my military medical team and right now I am in a military base. We are training, getting ready for leaving the country. 39. Add this name to the list:Sgt Patricia Riggs. Poor thing just lost her husband 2 months ago and must sell the motor home they had for 40,000 less than current value because it brings back memories. She is a sergeant stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Gets Free shipping once a year from the military. We had contacted we were interested then typed her name into google and found this site. It was amazing to see how her reply filled all the red flags that were mentioned. It made us laugh as we read it. This site is a valuable resource. Thanks!

  40. I told them to ship the car. Gave them the address for Wrigley filed and contact phone # for White House.

  41. Here’s one i found. Hello again,

Currently I’m in a military clinic in Tucson AZ having some investigations and analysis, preparing for my surgery.I have some hearing difficulties, almost deaf, because of an work accident.
The vehicle is sealed and ready for shipping to your home address. Shipping takes between 4-7 business days depending on the destination. All the documents you need for ownership, clean title, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the vehicle already notarized in your name.

For payment,we will be using the security provided by eBay which will hold the funds. In my opinion this is the safest way to handle the transaction. You will have the vehicle for inspection for 7 days BEFORE any money is released to me and I am sure that I am sending it to someone that actually has the money to buy it.In case you don’t like it (I can assure you it is not the case) eBay will refund you,the vehicle will be returned to me,no strings attached no extra charges
If you agree with moving forward with the deal through eBay please email me your full name and shipping address. As soon as I receive these information from you I will forward them to eBay along with the rest of the details in order for them to open a case regarding our deal.
Waiting for your reply, Debra Ramsey

    Hi,
Thank you for being interested in buying my 2008 Honda Odyssey EX-L. It has been extremely well maintained with a full service history and has never been involved in an accident. Only 65,983 miles, the van comes with a 6 Cylinder, 3.5 liter engine, power everything. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and the engine runs great. Title is clean. I bought it when I was serving at Eglin AFB, Florida but I was promoted and transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska for a 3 year period so I’m looking to buy a 4×4 truck over here.

The van is still in Florida crated and sealed ready to go. The shipping will be free because I will transport it using the Internal Logistic Department! The Logistic Department will deliver the van to the nearest US Air Force Base in your area and at that point you can pick it up or I can hire a tow truck in our network to have it delivered at your door. The whole shipping process will take 2-3 days. The financial part will be managed by eBay which means you will have a 5 day inspection period before committing to buy the van. In this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.

If you agree with my price $2000 and you are interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner, please provide me your full name and shipping address so I can inform eBay that I have a buyer!

  44. The same thing happened to me and I fell for it. I saved that money over an year so my family and I could finally have a car. I can’t stop crying..

  45. Scammer on CARS.com

My name is Amelie, happy to see you are interested in my 2004 BMW 325Ci. This is a non-smoker, clean vehicle (no liens or claims against it) clear title in hand. You must also know that it is in perfect condition in and out, no stains or signs of wear, never been involved in any accident. There are no hidden problems on it and you won`t have to replace anything on it. I can assure you of that because I took extremely well care of it. The vehicle has only 37,100 miles on it, 2.5L V6 RWD Engine with Automatic transmission. White with Black interior, New tires (less than 3000 miles on it), Power Top works Perfectly, Well maintained with service records, Oil changes done at the BMW dealership only, Heated Seats, Front 4 way power seats, etc.. VIN#: WBABW33414PL26066

The price I’m willing to sell is $4,000 (reduced). I’m selling it because I’m serving in Langley AFB, Virginia but I was promoted and will be transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska for a 3 years period, so I won’t be using it anymore. Let me know if you need more details and pics.
    Regards,
    Amelie

  46. Scam on craigslist and a couple of other sites from [email protected]. Has a 2004 ford truck. She, of course, is out of the country (flight attendant) and eBay is in possession of the car. Gives a link to more pictures and a fake eBay phone number of +1 (408) 890 2248 and a fake eBay email address of [email protected]. A middle eastern guy answers the phone “eBay”. I can tell you if you’ve ever called eBay, that’s not what happens. Anyway, their scam is to have you pay with eBay gift cards (which are real), but of course, when you email the numbers of the gift cards to the scammers, they buy stuff on eBay with these legitimate cards, and you get nothing.

  47. Came across a “great” deal… Same old story listed above. So they are still at it.

  48. We experienced multiple fake identities and impersonated identities doing this same scam several years ago while I was assigned to Eielson AFB, Alaska — the perps were claiming to be based military in Alaska with a car ready to be shipped; and unfortunately had multiple victims call us asking us to find the “Airman” who took their money. A terrible scam taking advantage of hundreds of victims who typically never even report because of their embarrassment.
    It continues —
Just got a report today from a military gal at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. Poor Bonnie Allen is just trying to sell some possessions prior to her one year deployment — to include a nice trailer. Of course she wants to use eBay and she will ship the trailer from Kentucky. The pics she uses come straight off dealer websites — nothing personal about them.
    Beware — SCAM-SCAM-SCAM

  49. Here is the one I almost fell for:
    Hello ,

First of all I want to thank you for your interest in my 2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 4WD I4 2.4L. The car has been extremely well maintained with a full service history, it only has 63,723 miles! It has new Michelin tires.

To support my argument regarding the condition of the car please visit the following photo album: https://www.ebayphotogallery.com/zdjecia2/Galeria/10353686/1#zdj3

  50. wow just today I got the same thing. I lowkey knew it was a scam as it was too good to be true then I seen your story which popped on google and read it. I just got the same thing.

    Hi,

Thanks for replying to my ad. I’m selling it because I’m serving in Offutt AFB, Nebraska but I was promoted and transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska for a 3 years period, so I don’t need it anymore at this time. Let me give you a few details about it: 2009 Land Rover Range Rover Sport – 4×4 HSE with only 88,385 miles on it, no accident history, clear title, no dents or dings and no scratches. Always adult driven and garaged, never abused or raced. If you are interested, it’s still available for sale and the price, as stated in the ad, is $2,000.00, so if you have the money ready to buy it email me back.

    Some details of the car:
    Vehicle title – Clean
    Mileage – 88,385
    Engine – 4.4L V8
    Transmission – Automatic
    Fuel type – Gasoline

I look forward to hearing from you,
    SSgt. Emily Martin
    Hi again,

As I’ve told you, at this moment I am in Offutt AFB, NE in a military base. I do a special training program each day and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or call whenever I want. The reason I’m selling this car way below market value is because don’t have time for negotiations and I need money before Sept 06 for my next house in Anchorage. The car is already at our Offutt Air Force Base Library form Offutt AFB, NE crated and ready to go. Like I already said, the delivery process will be managed by me. I think I can have it there at your home address within 1-2 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 10 days testing period after delivery. During that 10 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can move forward with this transaction.
