Used car buying scam from “military” personnel

While shopping online on Craigslist.com for a used car for my son, I can across this ad:

2000 HONDA Accord EX V6
LEATHER SUNROOF 200 Horse Power V6 Automatic Transmission Naples Gold Metallic Exterior Soft Plush Leather Interior In Dash CD Radio Remote Entry …Perfect CarFax History…No accidents no damage no problems…

The price? $2960!

With 116k miles, that’s at least $2000 below Kelley Blue Book! I excitedly emailed the contact and asked to make an appointment to see it.

The response was this in its entirety (emphasis mine):

Hello and sorry for my delay,

I’m Sgt. Robert Parra. This Honda is in perfect working condition. This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. No electrical problems on this beauty. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior looks like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 118k highway miles. VIN Number: 1hgcg1655ya068349

It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones. The body and paint are great. The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet.

Can this be legit? I am hoping it is!

I sent a message back to “Sgt. Parra” and asked him whether the car will pass the smog check for California. I figured if it was really legit, someone else probably bought it already, but it’d be worth asking.

Then a couple of hours later, I get another email. I contacted another seller of another ad from Craigslist for a Camry that I thought was a good buy.

Here is the email response in its entirely (emphasis mine):

Hello,

The 2003 Toyota Camry is located in Farmington, CT and it is in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever. It has 44k miles and the VIN is: 4T1BE32K03U655388. It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. I have the pictures hosted on the net and you can see them at:

I am catching on now…

Both cars advertised at incredible prices at about $2,900, both seller’s names are Robert, both are willing to ship from out of the area for free, both are in the military, both use photobucket to post pictures …

Since I’ve been scouring Craigslist, Autotrader and dealerships for a car, I had sent out several emails. I forgot what I sent out.

So a couple of hours later, I got yet another response, for an Acura I asked about.

Now I am rolling on the floor laughing!

Here’s an excerpt:

I googled this subject and found a forum discussion of someone who got this email, a friend of the Roberts, no doubt, and coincidentally also named Robert, with a cat and a wife who just joined him too! I put an excerpt here, but I’m sure you can figure out what the rest says:

I might have fallen for the first reply if the scammer would just be a little for creative in their approach.

Apparently, an epidemic of ads like this is on all kinds websites, including the sale of motorcycles, ATVs, jet skis, motor homes, trailers, and even farm equipment.

One member of the forum responded with this advice:

1. eBay does not “hold the money” until you are satisfied with the car. Once you pay them, that is it. And I suspect they will ask you to pay by Western Union.

2. The military does ship cars overseas for servicemen (why does this guy talk in pidgon english if he’s American, anyway?). But thet SHIP them, by SHIP, not by air. Total LIE.

3. American servicemen can drive their cars overseas without registering them there. Again total LIE. Why would a serviceman have a car shipped overseas if he could not register it?

The pattern is the same: a coveted item (BMW, Kobota Tractor, Honda motorcycle, etc.) worth $10,000 to $20,000 is offered for a pitiful amount – $2500 to $5000 with a long-winded “backstory” behind it. You wire them the money, thinking you scored big and that’s the last you hear of them.

They hijack eBay identifications by using those phishing scams. Typically if you look at their feedback, you’ll see it is some little old lady in Arkansas selling dolls. Suddenly, the person is a Seargent in the Army in England selling a car. What gives?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is….

  10. Yep the “too good to be true” law is still in effect folks. If you can’t look them in the eye and put your hands on the car then walk. NEVER send money. All you are doing is emboldening the scammers. Now half the cars I see for sale on Craig’s are scams. Quit feeding the fire.

  15. The scam is alive and well in the enclosed trailer listings on Craigslist by a user with the email [email protected]. she is impersonating the wife of U.S Army soldier Ramon S. Morris who was killed in Afghanistan in Dec. 2014. My instincts said something wasn’t right…so I Googled US soldiers killed recently in Afghanistan, found his name, followed it back to an obituary and read that his wife’s name was not Dorothy. They were from NYC but the trailer was listed in my area. I then Googled the email address and found dozens of craigslist listings for the trailer all over the country and with slightly different descriptions each time.

  30. PS – Beware of Craigslist. There are all kinds of bad elements on this free advertising site, so you get what you pay for. I learned last fall of a friend of a friend who sold cars regularly on this site and a Buyer asked to meet him on a Mercedes car ad at 10 PM at night. He was murdered for a darn car. Be careful where you meet people and not a odd hours of the night. With instances like this, Craigslist needs to be more proactive on removing these scams!

    I have to say that he/she made up this story very cautiously. They put a limit of two weeks such that the buyer doesn’t get much time to think over it and in that hurry makes a wrong decision. And when I emailed him back again to explain the process to me, the reply that I received was just like ‘cherry on the cake’:

    At the moment I’m stationed at a Military Force Base Petawawa. The car is already at our Military Logistics Department from Petawawa, ON ready to be delivered. Since the car is in a military base with no access you can not go there and take it only the uShip can deliver it because they have access in our base.     Shipping may take anywhere between 2-3 business days depending on the destination. All the documents including the title and the bill of sale with my signature on it, will come along with the car.

    Add “Ssgt Alfred Gundersen” to the list, selling a 2006 Honda CRV with 41,000 miles for… (get this!) $2500. He needs to sell it fast to pay the mortgage on his house. So, of course, he’s willing to get the car shipped anywhere, including across the country.

    ******EPP Scam on Kansas City Craigslist*******

    I texted the contact number (913)802-3621 for a Chevrolet truck listed on Craigslist in Kansas City. The reply was “Hi. I’ve posted this ad for my friend, contact her at mollyeaster33atgmaildotcom and you will get the info for the 99 Chevrolet Silverado”.

    I emailed ‘molly’ asking for more pictures, ‘she’ sent me 20 pictures and the email below.

    “My name is Molly, and I’m emailing you about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Never had or need any paint/body work done, garaged keep always, without any mechanical problems, tires and wheels are in great shape as well. This vehicle was used by my husband who died 4 month ago. The price was reduced at $1,500 because I’m in a hurry to find a buyer. I need to sell the car before the 15 of the next month, when I will be leaving on military duty with my medical team out of the country for a year and do not want to store my vehicle.

    I then asked for the location of the truck and when would be a good time to go and look at it.

    “Right now I’m in a military base we are training, getting ready for leaving the country.The delivery process will be managed by me. I think I can have it there at your home address within 3 working days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the ebay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing period after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask ebay to send you the details on this deal. If interested just email with your legal name (your right full name ’cause it will appear on the papers), full postal address where you want the vehicle delivered and your cell phone # where you can be reached so we can get the ball rolling.

    I then replied “That sounds great Molly! Since the Ebay Buyer Protection Program only works if you purchase the vehicle on Ebay’s website I need the Ebay auction ID number so I can purchase your truck and then I will give you my address, phone number and full name. Can’t wait to ‘get the ball rolling’!”

    I google searched the Kansas phone number (913)802-3621 in the craigslist post, the very first search listing gave me the location of that phone number. The icon was on a building at 10th st and Armstrong Ave. in Lenexa KS 66101.
    I then google mapped 10th and Armstrong and that business was listed as ‘Sunflower Auto Plaza’, which has been out of business for 3 years. SO I searched the IP address of the email sent by ‘molly’ and it’s from Mountain View, CA. and given activity associated with that IP address it appears to be an email server. Here’s the kicker, there’s a military base in Mountain View CA. These worthless bassturds have to be Democrats who are too GD sorry to work for a living and are better suited to lounging all day, collecting welfare and
    further fleecing hardworking taxpayers out of their hard earned money!
