While shopping online on Craigslist.com for a used car for my son, I can across this ad:
2000 HONDA Accord EX V6
LEATHER SUNROOF 200 Horse Power V6 Automatic Transmission Naples Gold Metallic Exterior Soft Plush Leather Interior In Dash CD Radio Remote Entry …Perfect CarFax History…No accidents no damage no problems…
The price? $2960!
With 116k miles, that’s at least $2000 below Kelley Blue Book! I excitedly emailed the contact and asked to make an appointment to see it.
The response was this in its entirety (emphasis mine):
Hello and sorry for my delay,
I’m Sgt. Robert Parra. This Honda is in perfect working condition. This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. No electrical problems on this beauty. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior looks like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 118k highway miles. VIN Number: 1hgcg1655ya068349
It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones. The body and paint are great. The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet.
Here are the pics of the car :
http://s229.photobucket.com/albums/ee106/accpix/As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it(for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you will don`t be satisfied about the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back.
I am located in London, United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and UK. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in US because we can’t register it here; it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take for ever. My final price on it is US 2,960 $. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 3 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.
Best Regards,
Robert Parra
Can this be legit? I am hoping it is!
I sent a message back to “Sgt. Parra” and asked him whether the car will pass the smog check for California. I figured if it was really legit, someone else probably bought it already, but it’d be worth asking.
Then a couple of hours later, I get another email. I contacted another seller of another ad from Craigslist for a Camry that I thought was a good buy.
Here is the email response in its entirely (emphasis mine):
Hello,
The 2003 Toyota Camry is located in Farmington, CT and it is in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever. It has 44k miles and the VIN is: 4T1BE32K03U655388. It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. I have the pictures hosted on the net and you can see them at:
http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/RobertBright/The price is $2,900 including shipping costs anywhere in the continental US. There are no other costs regarding this transaction.
The transaction will be closed only through a 3rd party and this way we will both be protected. My time is limited due to my job in the army so I decided to use a service from Worldpay. To begin the transaction I’ll need your full name and shipping address. I will forward the details of our transaction to Worldpay and then you will receive an invoice from them. The car will be shipped insured to your location with DAS and you will have 5 days for inspection.
Best regards,
Robert Bright.
I am catching on now…
Both cars advertised at incredible prices at about $2,900, both seller’s names are Robert, both are willing to ship from out of the area for free, both are in the military, both use photobucket to post pictures …
Since I’ve been scouring Craigslist, Autotrader and dealerships for a car, I had sent out several emails. I forgot what I sent out.
So a couple of hours later, I got yet another response, for an Acura I asked about.
Now I am rolling on the floor laughing!
Here’s an excerpt:
Hello and sorry for my delay,
Yes, I know, you are busy in the military, right?
The 1999 Acura TL is in perfect working condition. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line….It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones…The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet…
You must’ve been talking to Sgt. Robert Parra! Both of you have a cat! And do you also have a wife who doesn’t check ahead of time if a foreign car can be registered in the UK?
As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program…I am located in London,United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and Serbia. One months ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can’t register it here…It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. …
It’s Serbia now, very nice.
Best Regards,
Michael Parker
At least they are getting a little more creative with the name.
I googled this subject and found a forum discussion of someone who got this email, a friend of the Roberts, no doubt, and coincidentally also named Robert, with a cat and a wife who just joined him too! I put an excerpt here, but I’m sure you can figure out what the rest says:

I might have fallen for the first reply if the scammer would just be a little for creative in their approach.
Apparently, an epidemic of ads like this is on all kinds websites, including the sale of motorcycles, ATVs, jet skis, motor homes, trailers, and even farm equipment.
One member of the forum responded with this advice:
1. eBay does not “hold the money” until you are satisfied with the car. Once you pay them, that is it. And I suspect they will ask you to pay by Western Union.
2. The military does ship cars overseas for servicemen (why does this guy talk in pidgon english if he’s American, anyway?). But thet SHIP them, by SHIP, not by air. Total LIE.
3. American servicemen can drive their cars overseas without registering them there. Again total LIE. Why would a serviceman have a car shipped overseas if he could not register it?
The pattern is the same: a coveted item (BMW, Kobota Tractor, Honda motorcycle, etc.) worth $10,000 to $20,000 is offered for a pitiful amount – $2500 to $5000 with a long-winded “backstory” behind it. You wire them the money, thinking you scored big and that’s the last you hear of them.
They hijack eBay identifications by using those phishing scams. Typically if you look at their feedback, you’ll see it is some little old lady in Arkansas selling dolls. Suddenly, the person is a Seargent in the Army in England selling a car. What gives?
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is….
They are not only selling cars, this is a player grand piano with a price too good to be true. Originally I was told she was expecting a baby and wanted to sell for her to prepare for the kid, so I replied. Here is “her” reply and her story changed……
Thanks for getting back with me,
Right now we are in Helena, MT because my husband was moved here with the job and we already found an apartment here. The piano is here in at the shipping company sealed and ready to ship it. The delivery process is payed by us and we want to finish this deal through Google Checkout because they are a big company and we can both be protected and insured. You will receive the instrument in 1-2 days and you will get the chance to inspect it 3 days, play it and everything you want. During that 3 days testing period I will not be getting any money.
If by any reason the piano is not as described or if you find any problems with it, I will arrange to ship it back on my cost. Google will hold the funds until the inspection period is over and you decide if you’re going to buy it or not. This way you’re not going to pay for something you haven’t seen and with the inspection period you can make sure it’s as described.
If you’re interested to purchase just email me with your full name, shipping address and your phone number,so I can notify Google that you are selected as my buyer and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.
Best Regards,
Steph & Mike Fink

Hello,
Sorry for my late reply,
The car is still for sale. It has a clean title, very well maintained, no exterior damages and no
mechanical problems, i don’t smoke.
I have to sell this car as fast as I can because in three
weeks I will be in Afghanistan and I think I’ll stay there for a while that’s why I’m selling it so cheap.
Currently I’m in a military base in Florida and the car is here with me. I can ship for free within
US if you want to buy it. Let me know what you decide ASAP.
The pics speak for themselves, You’ll love the car, I can guarantee you that!
Thank you
Thank you for posting this site. I had a gut feeling about an ad I saw on Craigslist, but wanted to be sure. This one does not involve military, but I feel with the similar wording and evasive answers I was getting from the seller. This may be a scam as well. When I inquired about the vehicle, these are the responses and my counter-responses:
Hello,
Thank you for your interest in buying my car. My 2004 Toyota 4Runner Limited V8 is in great shape, no engine problems, damages or hidden defects. It was always garaged and never smoked in. I`m a single mother with 2 children and I have to work very hard to maintain my family. I`m selling it so cheap because I have money problems. The price is $2,500.00. I want to tell you that I do not sell my car in payments and I do not trade. Since I don’t have anyone to help me with the sale I decided to make this transaction through eBay. Giving the nature of this transaction please note that my sale terms are final and nonnegotiable. In order to move forward I will need your full name, address and phone number so i can register the deal at eBay Financial Department. After that eBay will send you the payment instruction.
Details about the car:
Year: 2004
Mileage: 85,447
Transmission: Automatic
Engine: 8 – Cyl.
Exterior Color: White
Interior Color: Tan
Title: Clear
The a/c is ice cold and the heat is hot!
My best wishes and I’m waiting your response so we can move forward with this deal.
I thought it odd that a “single mother with 2 children” would advertise on Craigslist under the “dealer” section. In addition, the vehicle was as much as $10,000 below asking prices from legitimate dealers. What the heck… I’ll play for a while. Here is my response:
Wanda,
Do you have a phone number where I can call and discuss this with you? I would like to make arrangements to come by and see the car tomorrow if possible. My phone number is (xxx)xxx-xxxx (yes, I gave my number… oh, well) if you would like to call me instead. Thank you.
Thanks
I figured if I am local, there should be no need for shipping charges if I am willing to pick it up, right?
“Wanda” responds:
Hi again,
As I told you in my last email we will use eBay VPP program to manage the payment because it’s the safest way for both of us. eBay is responsible to insure that both parties comply to transaction requirements, both parties must submit proof of payment/delivery presented in a legal form (payment/delivery receipt) by the registered payment/delivery service used. You will have to send payment using eBay verified Agent name . They will hold the funds until you receive the vehicle and also test it !!!
As soon as you’ll complete the payment, the shipping will start. It will take no more then 5 days to arrive at your home address.( I’ll pay the shipping). I offer 5 days for inspection, during this time,if the vehicle isn’t like I described you will get back all the funds you sent to eBay. Shipping back to my location will also be covered by me. I need your full name and full shipping address so I can open this deal with eBay.
See more pictures at: http://s1130.photobucket.com/albums/m528/4RunnerLimitedV8/
Waiting your answer!
WOW!! Evading my request to drive an hour to see it AND call me. Hmmm? I received this e-mail at 1:39 A.M. (according to my inbox). A mother of two is up that late on a work night? Hey, I’ve got insomnia sometimes, and I don’t want to be too judgmental (not yet, at least) so I decide to respond like this:
I have no problem paying through e-bay; that sounds like a good idea. But since I am local, is it possible to come by and see the vehicle before I send the payment through eBay? Also, if you could call me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx so I can ask a couple of questions, that would be great as well. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance.
Surely a legitimate seller wouldn’t mind seeing me in person. Hey, I was going to pay cash. What’s wrong with that? No need for eBay if I’m coming with money in hand. I figured if it was legitimate, I would have no problem seeing this vehicle. Then the seller responds like this:
I would have called you already to speed things up but right now i am at the hospital with my elder daughter and i really don’t have time to call or meet with you. I have a bad period now and this is the reason for what i have chosen to sell it because i have to buy her medicines and pay for her hospitalization. She had a school accident 2 weeks ago and the doctors said that she will be invalid. Once again i hope that you understand that and this is the reason for why i choose eBay to handle this transaction. Please reply with your full name and shipping address so i can open this deal thru eBay. They will send you the payment notification. There you’ll find all steps that you need to follow in order to complete this deal.
I will wait for your email.
Oh, crap!! Did “she” just play the sympathy card? And at Christmas time? Oh, the humanity!! Also, I noticed how the first communications were all but flawless with the grammar, capitalization, etc., but now it seems that that the seller has forgotten that and cannot even capitalize “I” throughout most of the last correspondence. Hmmm? I mean, come on, I am less than an hour away, I can’t find “her” location to see it, but I still have to give all MY pertinent information? Quid pro quo, Clarice!! I have not as of yet responded to the last e-mail because I have wasted too much time trying to figure this out and play a B.S. game. Maybe if time permits, I’ll have some fun with this fish (or should I say phish). But, oh well. I still need an inexpensive, reliable vehicle during Christmas, but at least I got a good laugh out of this. Beware folks!! The Grinch is everywhere trying to steal Christmas. And as for you scammers… may you get a lump of coal in your stocking!!
Hi Guys, I got the exact same email from sgt Roger Preste

Then I asked him to send a copy of the title. This is what he had to say.
All the papers are in the car signed by me and the car is crated, ready to be shipped…I am unable to scan the title. It has clear title and you will receive it along with all papers needed for registration. All paper will be signed by me. I am the 1st an only owner of the car. I am firm on the price. Here is how it works:
1. First of all I will need the following details from you: full name, shipping address and telephone number.
2. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to eBay.
3. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices (email forms).
4. After you will make the payment in an eBay trust fund account and confirm it to them they will contact me and I will ship the car to you. After you receive the car you will have 10 days to test, verify and do whatever you need to the car. If you will buy then I will receive the payment details from eBay so that I can pick up the money.
5. If the car is not as I told you or have some problems or is not as described they will refund you 100%. There is no risk in this deal. I don’t touch your money until you receive and inspect the car. The transaction is simple so everything should go as I planned. If you will decide that you will not buy the car there will be no need to ship it back because I will surely find a buyer in your area.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks for posting your experiences everyone. Be safe.

Ohh wow, now it’s John Rawson selling an 02 Tahoe for $2320.. He’s in Washington… lol
First Response::
Hi there,
The Tahoe it is in perfect condition, there’s not a scratch or any
dents on it. Everything from engine to tires is mint condition. I have
a clear title with no liens or loans. I’m selling it so low due the
fact that my medical team will deploy back to Afghanistan on February
29th for a 2 year contract and I won’t let it go to waste in my
backyard, therefore I need a fast and reliable buyer. If you are
interested email me back.

Soooo i was so excited, i told him if he holds it for me I will be willing to pay $2500 for it instead of $2320.. Really? You cant use the phone? never heard of that one.. His craigslist add said to contact him and “text is easier”…. but left no number… and now he cant use the phone… douchebag.. im gonna “send him the money”…. i love f*cking with scammers!

Second Response::
Right now i’m in a military base in WA ,Joint Base Lewis-McChord more
precisely. Due to military security reasons I’m restricted from
leaving the unit’s facility under any purpose and have strictly
limited phone access. I hope you can understand that we will have to
stick to email for now. The vehicle is here with me at the base but
I’ve already made all the arrangements with DAS to pick it up from the
base. DAS will also handle the title transfer for an extra $75.00. I
think the car will be in 3-5 days to your address. As I said in my
first email will take care of shipping charges. I will send all
necessary paperwork (clear title, bill of sale, user’s manual, pink
slip etc). Regarding the payment I want to use eBay protection
program. You’ll get 5 days to inspect and test drive after delivery.
During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money.
Once you inspect and decide to keep the car, will confirm your
decision with eBay and only then they will re-route me the money. In
this way we are both protected.
I need to know if you are interested in buying it so I can ask eBay to
send you the details on how this works. I have to fill out a form on
eBay and I need the name that will go on the title and an address
where you want the car delivered. Once I do it, eBay will email you
all the details on this transaction and we can get the ball rolling.
Typical scam……. Im gonna take this as far as I can 🙂 F*** with a bull, you get the horns 🙂
Beware of SGM Michael Pilgrim who is currently at HANSCOM AFB in MA. He is leaving for Afghanistan in approximately 10 days and has authorized cars.com to hand the sale of his 2001 BMW 540i for $5700. Once the instructions and approval are sent with all the pertinent markings of cars.com, the scam becomes blatant. He has deposited $6490 in an escrow account that has been frozed for 90 days to ensure the transaction is covered. Oh, and after I send the $5700 via Western Union in two separate transactions, to please forward him the information so that cars.com can arrange the shipping to my nearest military base. Yatta! Yatta! Yatta!
He sent the VIN number and I ran a CARFAX on it prior to getting the alleged approval from cars.com. The car was sold in Texas at auction 4 months ago and had 40,000 miles less on it that what he was stating it had. How could he have put 40,000 miles on a car in 4 months if he was in the middle of military training.
Hubby sent him an email stating this ain’t his first rodeo buying a car from the internet and there was no way in HELL he was sending money Western Union. Needless to say, he didn’t email back. So I sent an email asking for more information on the same ad to see if I’d get the same response. The fake invoice and fake approval from cars.com has been forwarded to AUTOTRADER.
1st email read thusly;

I’m involved in a military program currently located in Joint Base Lewis-McChord,WA due to military security reasons i’m restricted from leaving the unit’s facility under any purpose and have strictly limited phone access. I am only allowed to check my email few times a day. I hope you can understand that we will have to stick to email for now. The vehicle is here with me at the base in but I’ve already made all the arrangements with DAS to pick it up from the base. DAS will also handle the title transfer for an extra $75.00.Being in the army has some advantages and one of them is the fact that I can ship it very cheap.I will pay for the shipping charges and the $75.00 fee for title transfer. The financial part of this sale will be managed by eBay for our own protection as they act as a neutral third part. eBay will keep the money until you inspect/drive the vehicle.
This is how the eBay works:
1. I will contact eBay and give all the info about this deal.
2. They will email us the forms by email – about the buyer’s protection policy, delivery, and payment.
3. You will send the payment to eBay and they will notify me to ship the vehicle to your location. The estimated time of delivery is 3 to 5 days, they will deliver the vehicle on a flatbed truck.
4. After you will inspect/drive the vehicle and decide to keep it, eBay will forward me the funds and the deal is done.
You have 5 days to test it from the day you receive it. If by any chance you won’t be satisfied with it you will be fully refunded and I will have the shipping company come to pick it up and I have to pay the shipping back. If you wish to purchase it please provide me your full name, address so I can initiate the deal through eBay.
Good faith has always been my top priority and my most valued business approach.
Looking forward to hear from you!

Suggestion is to have all your friends, family, coworkers, facebookies, tweeters, and the entire WORLD to send this POS (Piece Of SH*T) emails with the subject line:
Subj: Dodge Dakota (OR) I want to buy this vehicle
That Asshat will be inundated with so much email and we can all sit back and LOL… I don’t think gmail accounts will visit this matter nor will craigslist admins, so we have to take action as citizens and blast these suckers with cyber-power.

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it(for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you won`t be satisfied about the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back.
I am located in Madrid, Spain and I was sent here with my department of peace maintenance. One month ago my husband moved here with me and brought the car with him but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can’t register it here; it has US specs and everything and registering it here in Europe will take for ever.
My final price on it is $ 1700.00. If you will take it for this price I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 3 days. Please get back to me ASAP if you decide to buy and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.
Best Regards,
Monica Dixon, SSgt, USAF1 SOMOS/MXOOA Maintenance Analysis 362-1594 Comm 884-1594
Guys check this out, now is name is Maj. Kim Frenzzen.
We should probably go look for him and kick his A..
Hello,
Thank you so much for your prompt response. Look more pics.
Please take a few moments and read my email carefully, I know it is long, but I will explain all the details about the car and the transaction. At the moment I’m stationed at Barcelona, Spain. making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan with the U.S. Convoy.
The car is already at our Military Logistic Department Fort Hood ,TX, crated and ready to go. The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. The shipping is free for you. Since the car is in a military base, with no access you can not go there and take it, only the Logistic Department can deliver it, because the car is in their custody. Shipping may take anywhere between 2 to 4 business days depending on the destination. All documents you need for ownership, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the car . For the payment I would like to use eBay as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the car and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep the car . So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the car before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 10 days to inspect the car . If you decide not to keep it eBay will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for both of us.
I’ll start the official procedure, and eBay will contact you about this. If you are interested in buying it just mail me back with:
– Your Full Name – Required by eBay (You’ll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.)
– Your Shipping Address and Phone Number – Required by the Logistic Department (They will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule work best for your to receive the car)
Again I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.
Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!
Maj. Kim Frenzzen
thanks for the heads up!! Thought it was too good to be true!! was glad I googled this before too much involvement!
Thank you so much for posting this. I have been waiting around all day for e-mails back from an “Army” guy who was selling a 2001 Toyota Tacoma by the name of Burt Russell. He said he needed to hurry and sell the truck before he was shipped overseas with his medical team. He said he was stationed in Nevada and could ship the truck and I would pay eBay. He said they would “hold the money” and then once I received the truck, the money would go to him. It def. sounded too good to be true. I told him never mind because I checked the internet before, THANK GOD! Keep the word out there because I almost fell for it!
My mother was just at the point of sending money. I came arcoss this website! Thank you for all the posts. I guess I will add a new name to the list.
I sealed the Nissan in an US Air Forces warehouse at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. It is ready to be shipped and a truck service I have arranged will deliver it to your place. The delivery will be door-to-door, at your exact location, so you will not have to pick it up from somewhere. Check the attachments for the pictures with the Altima.
The VIN is 1N4AL21E78C196357, automatic, 67,834 miles.
So we will be using Google Checkout as a supervisor for the transaction. Basically they will monitor the entire process. They will secure the payment and they will also supervise the shipping process and they will make sure we are both on the same page. The main idea is that Google act as a neutral third party in this transaction. Your money is fully guaranteed by Google because you will send payment to an Google Checkout account and not directly to me. So, no funds exchange hands until you inspect the vehicle. I trust this will meet with your approval as it does not expose you to any potential financial loss. After that they will either send payment to me (if you will accept the vehicle) or refund you (if you won’t like the vehicle after the inspection). Though I’m sure you will love the car and will not want to return it, it’s good to know that you do have this option available.
Also tags on the Altima just expired, so you can’t drive the car back home.
If you wish to proceed just shoot me and email with your legal name(for the bill of sale) and a delivery address, a phone # where you can be reached and I will initiate the deal through Google Checkout (this info will also ease and speed up all the paperwork).
I apologize if it seems like I’m pushing on this deal but I really want to be sure everything is clarified before any further steps.
Staff Sgt. Anthony Powell, 338th Training Squadron,
Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS
Found a deal on AutoTrader for a 2002 TDI Beetle, Here is the email I got:
We will do this transaction through Cars to be safe and easy for both of us. This is my first time too when I use Cars and I don` know more about it.All I know is that they act as a third party and will be both protected in this transaction. They will keep your money until you will confirm that you like and keep the car.
The military cargo will call you with one day before they arrive at Saratoga to set up an hour when to come and pick up the car. You will need your ID for base access and the transaction invoice scanned so you can pick up the car. After you pick up the car,you will have 5 days to test and inspect it. If you will not be satisfied,I will arrange the shipping back and Cars will refund your full amount. If you like the car,you will have to contact Cars and confirm them that you will keep it so they can release the money to me.
If all is OK for you,E-mail me back with the name and address of the person which will take care of this deal so I can start the transaction.
Waiting for your E-mail !
Thank you
Robert
I emailed and asked about this link and never heard back from him. Go figure.
I knew it was too good to be true. Interesting to see how the letters have evolved over the years. I even thanks the guy for his service in the Military! geez… The photo’s he sent me had a photo of the license plates, so I’m currently running those to see who they belong to.

The mileage is accurate and all power equipment is functioning properly. Exterior/interior is very clean.
I have dropped my price to $2000 (purchase price) since this is an urgent sale and I need to sell it before 15 June, when I will be deployed in Afghanistan(Operation Enduring Freedom) with my platoon replacing the troops scheduled to come home.
I have decided to use eBay for this sale. The car is at Logistic Department from Fort Stewart U.S. Army, crated in a truck and ready to go. The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. I will offer a 5 days period to inspect the car from the moment you receive it, before I will have your money. The shipping will be free for you.
If you agree with my price $2000, I need your FULL NAME AND ADDRESS, so I can inform ebay that I have a buyer! I will forward your details to them and then you will receive from ebay the transaction details(payment, shipping).
Thank You
Sgt. Luciano Lanister
Looks like I’m a clubmember, same exact format as above instances, except I did a name search found the base, and called to let them know one of our boys was being used in a scam and to give him a heads up about his identity being used. My idea is that the real soldier is watching my back, the least I can do is try to help him.

Thanks to the person who started this website! I wasn’t looking for a car but instead JET SKIIS! Good thing I know a Lil about skiis & the EBay process…..MSgt Michael Q Reyes was offering two 2006 Sea Doo Rxp & Rxt for $3900 the problem is even tho their six years old they total @ $21,000!! Said the $ WAS TO FINISH BUILDING A HOUSE!! LOL Said shipping & handling was included in the price red flag #2 same script could test out for 5 days but once the eBay motors invoice came thru I really knew what time it was thank God I’m an continuous eBay shopper EBAY DOES NOT HOLD MONEY FOR ANY TRANSACTION ONCE U PAY U PAY END OF STORY!! THE funny thing is at least use a Military name that exsists! Get a job..lol
August 2012 and scam still going. A Harley motorcycle on E Bay. E Bay removed the posting due to high volume hits in order to check out the seller since it was a new account. The rest of the story is the same. The name being used is Amanda Hall.
Has had a guy emailing me about a 2006 nissan maxima and was just a little iffy about it to beging with bc a 2006 maxima for $4000 and free shipping and everything… Hate scammers and wish craigslist would stop letting them post there crap on there for this to happen. thanks for all the comments above to let me know my gut feeling was right
They are still at it folks and in the RV scam business too. I was looking for a trailer for the family and kids and lo and behold on San Diego Craigslist there it was the creme de la creme airstream for about 1/3 of what other sites had it listed, so of course I had better hurry and inquire about it before it was gone. The emails below show a very slick set up, complete with nice pic slide show of “someones trailer?” with scrolling credits! The emails have the same flavor as the ones from Maj Frenzzen, Sgt Lanister and Sgt Powell from earlier in 2012…this guy now calls himself William S Sakowski but his stakes have raised as he almost got me to bite on $8500. He even drops a Semper Fi for a military sounding affect. My kids were crushed when I smelled a rat and found this site and realized similar stuff has been going on since 2008. I am relieved and hope by posting this(his name) it will help someone else figure it out before its too late. Its pretty slick and they only post it for like a day or less in cities that they are NOT in so they have to ship it to you. Clever, especially at such discounted prices that you don’t care where it comes from. Too good to be true of course but you get caught up in the thought of “I found a steal and the guys anxious to sell”. They are now using Google Checkout as their “trustee”…even give you a link to see that there is in fact a Google Checkout. I did not go any further to know what was laying in wait.
Hello,

Hi again,
I’m currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps and my assigned unit has been placed in a prepare-to-deploy status before a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan. Right now I’m stationed on a military training facility located approximately 60 miles from NAS Whidbey Island (MATSG-53), for the final phase of our pre-deployment training. As I told you in my previous email… (If you are unable to come over here and pick up the camper in person, I will take care of the shipping process without any cost to yourself.)
In order to protect both parties in the case of future disputes, there is a 10-day inspection period, which will be granted through a reputable third-party service. In our case Google Checkout acts as a trustee to ensure that all the bases are covered before any money changes hands. For your piece of mind during the inspection period, the designated funds for the acquisition will be held in escrow by Google Checkout as a precautionary measure. The money placed into escrow shall be released only after all the purchase conditions have been met and the sale is final. It’s understood that even in the worst case scenario of non-acceptance, you’ll get your money back and you don’t have to pay any extra.
If you want to continue with the purchase under the above-mentioned terms, please email me back with the following information:
– Your Full Name and Shipping Address (Home Address, City, State, zip/Postal Code) – Info. required by Google Checkout, in order to complete the necessary formalities, and then proceed with the purchase agreement.
– Your Phone Number: (Home, Mobile, Office) – Info. required for transportation purposes, our logistics coordinator will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1-day ahead of arrival. In this way you can communicate what time-frame works for you to receive the unit.
I look forward to your response,
William S. Sakowski

Looks like it’s a scam artist in Lagos State Nigeria. If you check into Lagos scams in World Travels Forum which talks about scams, the name Emily Gibbs comes up a few times as a party that monies should be sent to. The scams are very real. They pose as military personnel.
Scammers are taking to Craigslist, offering too-good-to-be-true discounts on cars for military personnel. In some cases, the scammers claim they are military members about to be deployed and need to sell a vehicle fast. Similarly, others offer military members a special discount for serving their country. More disturbingly, the scammers are offering low-priced vehicles because a U.S. military member who died in combat owned the vehicle and the family wants to get rid of it fast. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) says scams like these usually require a wire transfer and promise free shipping. The description of the cars is lifted from auto sites, and typically you can Google the vehicle ID number, to determine whether it’s a real deal or a hoax.
Unacceptable … but often un-prosecutable.

Ok. I am so sad to find this…my daughter just gave her name and address to someone EXACTLY LIKE THIS except a female RN in miliatry and selling her recently divorces husband’s car…. 2003 honda accord for $1,850. She already gave her name and address – has not been asked to pay anything. Is she in jeopardy of anything…she is a college student and a single mom?

It is still available for sale if interested, my last price is $2200, including delivery to your home address.
So if you decide to buy this truck or need further information please get back to me as soon as possible. I have many interested people on the truck you can provide me your full name, delivery address and phone# so I can reserve the truck for you !
*NOTE* I am not available for trades, monthly payments or financing!
I look forward hearing from you,
Nathan Allen
His Response to my Email..
Hi again,
Sorry for not providing my phone# I usually do business by talking directly to the other party but since I am in the middle of a special exercise with my squadron we are not allowed to use outside communication, though you can text me at: (858) 633-3744 and I will get back to you ASAP! The reason I’m selling this vehicle way below market value, is because I would like to help ease the burden of my sisters medical expenses, which she has acquired due to a serious illness. The truck is with me in Hawaii at Hickam Air Force Base where I am currently deployed.
The shipping will take 2 to 3 days and it’s not a problem because I will have the vehicle shipped by an Air Force cargo plane so there won’t be any additional shipping costs. Also I will arrange for a truck to transport the vehicle to your home address. You will receive it along with all the documents including title, bill of sale, 2 set of keys, full service records and more. Because it is a large transaction, we will complete the deal only using an authorized third part like eBay because I already prearranged the whole process with them. The vehicle is sealed and ready for delivery. The payment will be sent first to an eBay attorney and will be kept safe until the buyer receives and inspects the vehicle. Please take into consideration that I will get paid only after you receive the vehicle and make sure everything is as agreed. You will have 5 days to test the vehicle and if you are not satisfied you can reject it and I will take it back.
I need your full name and delivery address in order to have the deal started. They will let you know what you have to do for the payment. Like this you’ll be able to talk directly with them and ask all you want to know.
I will appreciate an answer as soon as possible.
Regards,
Nathan Allen
Here are two more scammer names to add to lists. These guys were selling nice older cars in my area and I got really excited because I’m trying to buy my first car. Here’s there message:
Hello,
If you are asking if my 2003 Toyota Camry is still available, well YES! it
is.
What can i tell you about my Camry? I can tell you that it’s my personal car
and it’s condition is great, as you will see in the pictures. I tried my
best to keep the title clean, so there are no accidents and no liens. All
you have to do is to register it and drive it.
I suppose you want to see pictures, a car report and information about it,
so i tried to put them all in a web page. Here is the web page:
https://sites.google.com/site/2003toyotacamryle/
You can click on it or copy and put it in your Internet browser (i recommend
to copy it in case it doesn’t work by clicking on it).
Regarding the price, i decided to sell it for $2950 and in case you decide
to buy it, you can reply to this message.
Thank you,
Lt. Ray Driver
That one was sent from [email protected]
The other one was literally exactly the same message, except from [email protected].
Watch out for these scum!! NEVER PAY FOR A CAR BEFORE SEEING IT!!!!
calvin.adams11 and harold.coleman21 both @gmail.com are selling a 2003 accord on craigslist. I specifically want an accord, so I emailed them both and I received a reply about 6 hours later. About 445 am. First from “calvin” then immediately from “harold” once I had replied to “calvin”. They both sent the exact same message, and since I had sent out my initial contact as a mass message to 4 listings, it was even more suspicious. Here is what they both sent:
Hi,
My name is Calvin Adams and I received your email about my 2004 Honda Accord EX-L .I want to thank you for your interest. The car is in excellent condition the body and paint are great, no scratches and no dents; the interior is clean; it has never been involved in an accident; the title is clear.I’m selling because I was promoted and transferred to RAF Elmendorf in Anchorage Alaska for a 3 years period, so I do not want to let it ruin in my backyard, therefore I need a fast and reliable buyer.
A few more words about the car:
2004 Honda Accord EX-L
82,692 miles (mostly highway)
Automatic
2.4L I4 16V -Engine

Thank you Lord and Money Gram employees for clueing us into our scam scenario!
Craigslist post: a 2000 Honda Civic in mint condition with 74,482 miles and a nice rack on the top; sporty and spotless. All we had to do was Money Gram $1,800 to Capt. Diane Gerard (recently moved to London awaiting a deployment with her regiment to Afganistan), wait for the car to be dropped off at our front door via “free” military shipping from New York where she left it,
we got a clue, but “she” has been persistantly pursuing our $1,800 dollars.
Her horribly grammered most recent response:
from email: [email protected]
I understand you are concerned but honestly it is not the case. I want to take this opportunity to assure you that there is nothing to be worried about this deal. I am sorry because you feel like that about me. Now,if you are in my place to sell something, you’ll take the risk to cheat people and have the police on your door in a few days? I don’t think so! I m in this position! Freedom is more precious then everything in this world!! I didn’t get to this stage in life by doing dumb things. I would never cheat you or swindle you!! You have my word and good faith on the fact that I’ll keep my end of the bargain. I have never lied and cheated anyone. I will not risk my career, my freedom and my future for anything in the world!
Please try to contact another Money Gram from your city and o send the payment following exactly the instructions that Google Checkout had send it to you, because the shipping process is not complete and it can not begin if you don’t try to confirm the payment. Most of the Moneygram offices are not aware of your Google Checkout privacy and policy it happens to me in the past, i suggest you to send the money for a personal reason.
Thank you and have a nice day,
Capt. Diane Gerard
“hey i also got the same email while I contacted the person Harold.”

Hello,
And sorry for my delay, I was at work and had no internet access.
My 2006 Nissan Maxima SL is in perfect working condition. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 92k miles. Vin #: 1N4BA41EX6C863926. The car is in perfect condition inside and out. This car always passed emissions tests. The tires are almost new and the oil is changed. The water pump and the brake disks have been replaced. This car needs nothing but a new driver.
It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones. The body and paint are great. The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet.
Here are the pics of the car, click on this link :

You can also see there the Carfax report. The title is clean, ready to be transferred into your name. So if you decide on buying the car, I want the deal closed only through eBay Motors Safe Purchase Program. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it, eBay will release the payment to me, in this way we are both protected. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the car before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 10 days to inspect it.
I am a Sergeant with the US Army, and about 6 months ago I was deployed to Madrid, SPAIN. I will stay in Spain for the next two years. We are here for a special NATO Training Program. One month ago, my husband moved here with me and brought the car with him, but now we have to sell it back in the United States, because we can’t drive it here as we can’t register it; it has US specs and everything, and registering it in Europe will take for ever.
My final price on it is $1,860US. (930 down and the other 930 after you test and accept the car).
If you will take it for this price, the shipping is free for you. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. From the moment the payment is secured by eBay the shipping process will begin and it will arrive at your address in about 3 max. 4 working days.
Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, please reply and tell me the address where you want me to send the car to you. I will start the transaction with eBay and after that eBay will contact you and give you all the info and documentation about for our transaction.
Respectfully,
Ssg. Ashley Arrington
wttff !! they almost fooled me too.. thanks for saving my buttt

Same thing here on a 2000 Civic DX on craigslist. The thing that made me really question it was there was a dealer window sticker on the car. But they made it sound like it was a private seller. This is what they said.
“Hello ,
Is still available and has 74,488 miles, 4 cyl. engine and automatic transmission. My Honda is excellent in every way, has no accidents reports, with no need for additional repairs and clear title. Anyway, thank you for your interest in buying the car. I am selling it at this final price $1,800 because my husband died two months ago (he had a heart attack) and brings me bad memories and that’s the reason I want to sell it asap. I along with my daughter decided to sell the house and we moved to my sister in New York trying to start a new life. If you are interested in buying my car, feel free to email me at any time.
Best Regards! Diane

Then I did a Google search on the email address and I found this page!
Stupid people……
Appreciate the blog. Just responded to one of these great deals from an overseas military SSgt. The first red flag involved shipping by military transport. Really. I am retired military and the vehicle just happened to be in the same area that I live in by a military base. 2006 Maxima. When I emailed that I live there after locating the car on Craig list in Charlotte, NC I have not heard anymore from this individual.
I suspect another scam from a divorcee who wants to get rid of the car. Unfortuntely the care is not where it is advertised on Craig list but is in another state1000 miles away. I asked to be called to have my questions answered but I have not heard a peep. I will not deposit my money with e-bay for them to make arrangements for me. 1999 Rava 4. What looked like it was going to be a good deal my be too much to be real. Thank God for research capacity. No one (or at least not me) has money to just give away to scammers.
Dianne Gerard just responded to me saying that she wants to sell her Tacoma because it reminds her of her husband who just died of a heart attack. Same [email protected]
so i have been talking to the same person but (her) name is diane gerard. these are the emails she sent me.

Hello again Tiffany ,
As I told you in my first e-mail, I am in New York. Before leaving I had prearranged the deal with eBay Motors so my presence isn’t necessary. They will not give me any money until you receive and test the car .The car is at the shipping company, ready to be delivered. The shipping cost is included in the total price of the car!. You have five days to test it and inspect the car. So if you want to make this deal I need the following details from you:
-full name and address
-shipping address
-phone number
After I will have all this details I will forward them to eBay Motors and I will proceed the order. They will contact you with all the details that you need to complete this deal and also to see that i am covered by them and that I am legit seller. Waiting your email with the requested details.
Thank you and have a nice day.
Diane
I just receive an notification from ebay ,in which they stated that you can not complete this transaction because you don’t have the funds available. i am very disappointed because you don’t tell me from the start about this. Car is in a great shape, you have nothing to worry about these aspects. I have all the documents inside the car so you will get those along with it( the car will be delivered with the title, owner’s manual, 2 sets of keys, service records, and of course the bill of sale authorised and signed by me.
It is absolutely rediculous for people to take atvantage of people qho are just looking for a good deal!!! dont fall for it people!!!
i almost sent the money but i searched the email and found this!!! Thanks everybody for saving me and my whole tax return!!!
God Bless
Thanks,
Tiffany Frederick
cant believe people these days!!!
wow!! so she tells me she is deaf!! lol im just keeping it going!!
I got into a similar situation with a Toyota avalon on ebay. The woman said her son had died and it was his car and she didn’t want it around anymore. I did some research and sure enough, it was a scam. Your situation is especially seedy because someone presented themselves as a member of the armed forces. It’s a shame. Hope you find an actual car soon!
i got scammed with the same, by “sgt. Josha Labbe” which seems to be a real person- i googled his name.
1800 for the car- a nissan Altima.
turned it into the high way patol, and fbi.
I see your posts about people pretending to be military and having a vehicle for sale. Add one more list to the name of scams.. They are also using Jane Capwell. My daughter recieved a response to a add for a maxima for sale on craigs list. This supposed Jane Capwell responded with links to the pics of this vehicle and photos of the vin number. Also included a CARFAX report!!! How they did that I don’t know.. but they did it. Turns out this is a scam!! When she came to me about it.. being former military and having a husband who is retired military also who still currently works for the military.. we knew right away it was a scam. The govt is not in the habit of shipping people cars for free just because the saler is or was military.. it’s just not happening!!!! My rule of thumb for anything like this is.. If it sounds to good to be true then it probably is!! Hope this helps..
Hi,
The jet skis is in excellent condition and runs perfect.2005 SeaDoo RXP and RXT both in good running condition. The RXP is a 2 seater and has only 80hrs and the RXT is a 3 seater and has only 85hrs. They have 215hp Supercharged four-stroke, three-cylinder Rotax™ SOHC with Intercooler, closed-loop cooling.
They both run very fast and can get up to 70 -75 mph. The hull is in good condition. The trailer, 2 protective covers, 6 life jackets and a tube are included with your purchase.
If you’d like to view the pictures here is a link: http://imageshack.us/g/1/10053065/
If you decide to buy it, you’ll receive all the papers, owner manual, keys and a buy-sell contract already signed by me.
I have a low price ( $ 2,399 ) because I want to sell the jet skis very quickly. My husband died 3 months ago and I along with my daughter decided to sell the house and we moved to my parents in Tennessee. Due to the fact I am very busy at work and don’t stay too much at home I can’t conclude this transaction personally. But I left everything prepared for the sale. The transaction will be made trough Google Checkout. This way you can receive shipping assistance, title transfer help, etc.
If you are really interested in purchasing the jet skis please contact me asap.
Kind Regards,
Elisha
another scam for jets skis. be careful. this guy is selling all kinds of stuff.
All of them have the photo host service name Photobucket, but here is another story.
Hello,
First of all I want to thank you for your interest in my 2005 Acura TL 3.2 V6. I am selling the car because I’m in the US Army and my unit will be deployed to Kuwait and I don’t want it to get old in my garage. The price is low because I need to sell it before April 5th. The Acura is in excellent condition and runs great. It has only 84,650 miles, clean title. It has no damage, no scratches, never involved in an accident, everything works as it should with no hidden issues. Price as stated in the ad is $2.280. The car is in Fargo, ND; in case it gets sold I will take care of the shipping.
Here’s some photos, in case you want to see more: http://s1285.beta.photobucket.com/user/acuratlblack4dr/library/
I will ship it through DAS shipping company. I will take care of the shipping to your location with no extra expense to you, like I said. I think I can have it sent to your location in 4-5 working days. I am a member of the eBay BuyBack Program and using this service you will get a 3 days testing period after delivery.
During that 3 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested in buying it so I can ask eBay to send you the details on how this works. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay ( full name, full shipping address and phone no.) so we can get things started.
I will be waiting for your reply.

The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. The shipping is free for you. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the Yahoo! Finance buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 7 days testing period after delivery. I think the scariest part is that the object isn’t always to get the big money, but just to get names, addresses and phone numbers for identity theft.
In many cases they are preying on very vulnerable people, in fact, they count on it…
In my hunt for a car this week I ran across 2 versions of this scam.
The first email was a mother saying she had lost her husband and son 2 months before, so she was selling her son’s car.
______________________________________
The second one I kept getting forms of, claiming to be military, and this makes me so sad because I was in the military and life is hard enough without people using people in a military situation for a scam, and that turns my stomach.
Since this web highlights the military scam, i will post the 3rd email from 2 different people:
As I’ve previously told you my medical team will deploy back to Afghanista n. The car is here with me at the base of Texas National Guard and the delivery process will be managed and paid by me.The estimate time of delivery is 3-4 days. It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the Google Checkout protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing period after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask them to send you the details on this deal. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for google (full name, address where you want the car delivered and your phone number).
Thank you

What’s scary is that i provided my phone as routine, without a thought, and my name is on my email. And as we learned, one of the uses for the scam is just to get information, as well as the big payout.
Stay safe everyone! and Take care!
