1. They are not only selling cars, this is a player grand piano with a price too good to be true. Originally I was told she was expecting a baby and wanted to sell for her to prepare for the kid, so I replied. Here is “her” reply and her story changed……

   Thanks for getting back with me,

   Right now we are in Helena, MT because my husband was moved here with the job and we already found an apartment here. The piano is here in at the shipping company sealed and ready to ship it. The delivery process is payed by us and we want to finish this deal through Google Checkout because they are a big company and we can both be protected and insured. You will receive the instrument in 1-2 days and you will get the chance to inspect it 3 days, play it and everything you want. During that 3 days testing period I will not be getting any money.
   If by any reason the piano is not as described or if you find any problems with it, I will arrange to ship it back on my cost. Google will hold the funds until the inspection period is over and you decide if you’re going to buy it or not. This way you’re not going to pay for something you haven’t seen and with the inspection period you can make sure it’s as described.
   If you’re interested to purchase just email me with your full name,shipping address and your phone number,so I can notify Google that you are selected as my buyer and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.

This one does not involve military, but I feel with the similar wording and evasive answers I was getting from the seller. This may be a scam as well. When I inquired about the vehicle, these are the responses and my counter-responses:

   WOW!! Evading my request to drive an hour to see it AND call me. Hmmm? I received this e-mail at 1:39 A.M. (according to my inbox). A mother of two is up that late on a work night? Hey, I’ve got insomnia sometimes, and I don’t want to be too judgmental (not yet, at least) so I decide to respond like this:

   I have no problem paying through e-bay; that sounds like a good idea. But since I am local, is it possible to come by and see the vehicle before I send the payment through eBay? Also, if you could call me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx so I can ask a couple of questions, that would be great as well. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance.

   Surely a legitimate seller wouldn’t mind seeing me in person. Hey, I was going to pay cash. What’s wrong with that? No need for eBay if I’m coming with money in hand. I figured if it was legitimate, I would have no problem seeing this vehicle. Then the seller responds like this:

   I would have called you already to speed things up but right now i am at the hospital with my elder daughter and i really don’t have time to call or meet with you. I have a bad period now and this is the reason for what i have chosen to sell it because i have to buy her medicines and pay for her hospitalization. She had a school accident 2 weeks ago and the doctors said that she will be invalid. Once again i hope that you understand that and this is the reason for why i choose eBay to handle this transaction. Please reply with your full name and shipping address so i can open this deal thru eBay. They will send you the payment notification. There you’ll find all steps that you need to follow in order to complete this deal.

   Oh, crap!! Did “she” just play the sympathy card? And at Christmas time? Oh, the humanity!! Also, I noticed how the first communications were all but flawless with the grammar, capitalization, etc., but now it seems that that the seller has forgotten that and cannot even capitalize “I” throughout most of the last correspondence. Hmmm? I mean, come on, I am less than an hour away, I can’t find “her” location to see it, but I still have to give all MY pertinent information? Quid pro quo, Clarice!! I have not as of yet responded to the last e-mail because I have wasted too much time trying to figure this out and play a B.S. game. Maybe if time permits, I’ll have some fun with this fish (or should I say phish). But, oh well. I still need an inexpensive, reliable vehicle during Christmas, but at least I got a good laugh out of this. Beware folks!! The Grinch is everywhere trying to steal Christmas. And as for you scammers… may you get a lump of coal in your stocking!!

   All the papers are in the car signed by me and the car is crated, ready to be shipped…I am unable to scan the title. It has clear title and you will receive it along with all papers needed for registration. All paper will be signed by me. I am the 1st an only owner of the car. I am firm on the price. Here is how it works:
   1. First of all I will need the following details from you: full name, shipping address and telephone number.
   2. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to eBay.
   3. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices (email forms).
   4. After you will make the payment in an eBay trust fund account and confirm it to them they will contact me and I will ship the car to you. After you receive the car you will have 10 days to test, verify and do whatever you need to the car. If you will buy then I will receive the payment details from eBay so that I can pick up the money.
   5. If the car is not as I told you or have some problems or is not as described they will refund you 100%. There is no risk in this deal. 7. BUYER BEWARE of lauren thompson “selling” a 2006 nissan maxima on craigslist. It is shameful the extent people will go to take money out of the hands of hard working citizens. Maybe these scammers should take all this time they spend trying to scam everyone else, to I dont know, call me crazy ACTUALLY GET A JOB! FYI to scammers there is a JOBS section on craigslist, where you could actually EARN some real money. Although there are just as many scammers just like these ones on there as well. Good Luck.

   Right now i’m in a military base in WA ,Joint Base Lewis-McChord more
   precisely. Due to military security reasons I’m restricted from
   leaving the unit’s facility under any purpose and have strictly
   limited phone access. I hope you can understand that we will have to
   stick to email for now. The vehicle is here with me at the base but
   I’ve already made all the arrangements with DAS to pick it up from the
   base. DAS will also handle the title transfer for an extra $75.00. I
   think the car will be in 3-5 days to your address. As I said in my
   first email will take care of shipping charges. I will send all
   necessary paperwork (clear title, bill of sale, user’s manual, pink
   slip etc). Regarding the payment I want to use eBay protection
   program. You’ll get 5 days to inspect and test drive after delivery.
   During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money.
   Once you inspect and decide to keep the car, will confirm your
   decision with eBay and only then they will re-route me the money. In
   this way we are both protected.
   I need to know if you are interested in buying it so I can ask eBay to
   send you the details on how this works. I have to fill out a form on
   eBay and I need the name that will go on the title and an address
   where you want the car delivered. Once I do it, eBay will email you
   all the details on this transaction and we can get the ball rolling.

   Typical scam……. Im gonna take this as far as I can 🙂 F*** with a bull, you get the horns 🙂

9. Beware of SGM Michael Pilgrim who is currently at HANSCOM AFB in MA. He is leaving for Afghanistan in approximately 10 days and has authorized cars.com to hand the sale of his 2001 BMW 540i for $5700. Once the instructions and approval are sent with all the pertinent markings of cars.com, the scam becomes blatant. He has deposited $6490 in an escrow account that has been frozed for 90 days to ensure the transaction is covered. Oh, and after I send the $5700 via Western Union in two separate transactions, to please forward him the information so that cars.com can arrange the shipping to my nearest military base. Yatta! Yatta! Yatta!

   He sent the VIN number and I ran a CARFAX on it prior to getting the alleged approval from cars.com. The car was sold in Texas at auction 4 months ago and had 40,000 miles less on it that what he was stating it had. How could he have put 40,000 miles on a car in 4 months if he was in the middle of military training.

   Hubby sent him an email stating this ain’t his first rodeo buying a car from the internet and there was no way in HELL he was sending money Western Union. Needless to say, he didn’t email back. So I sent an email asking for more information on the same ad to see if I’d get the same response. The fake invoice and fake approval from cars.com has been forwarded to AUTOTRADER.

They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the car and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep the car . I was looking for a trailer for the family and kids and lo and behold on San Diego Craigslist there it was the creme de la creme airstream for about 1/3 of what other sites had it listed, so of course I had better hurry and inquire about it before it was gone. The emails below show a very slick set up, complete with nice pic slide show of “someones trailer?” with scrolling credits! The emails have the same flavor as the ones from Maj Frenzzen, Sgt Lanister and Sgt Powell from earlier in 2012…this guy now calls himself William S Sakowski but his stakes have raised as he almost got me to bite on $8500. He even drops a Semper Fi for a military sounding affect. My kids were crushed when I smelled a rat and found this site and realized similar stuff has been going on since 2008. I am relieved and hope by posting this(his name) it will help someone else figure it out before its too late. Its pretty slick and they only post it for like a day or less in cities that they are NOT in so they have to ship it to you. Clever, especially at such discounted prices that you don’t care where it comes from. Too good to be true of course but you get caught up in the thought of “I found a steal and the guys anxious to sell”. They are now using Google Checkout as their “trustee”…even give you a link to see that there is in fact a Google Checkout. I did not go any further to know what was laying in wait.

25. Looks like it’s a scam artist in Lagos State Nigeria. If you check into Lagos scams in World Travels Forum which talks about scams, the name Emily Gibbs comes up a few times as a party that monies should be sent to. The scams are very real. They pose as military personnel.

    Scammers are taking to Craigslist, offering too-good-to-be-true discounts on cars for military personnel. In some cases, the scammers claim they are military members about to be deployed and need to sell a vehicle fast. Similarly, others offer military members a special discount for serving their country. More disturbingly, the scammers are offering low-priced vehicles because a U.S. military member who died in combat owned the vehicle and the family wants to get rid of it fast. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) says scams like these usually require a wire transfer and promise free shipping. The description of the cars is lifted from auto sites, and typically you can Google the vehicle ID number, to determine whether it’s a real deal or a hoax.

    Unacceptable … but often un-prosecutable.

About 445 am. First from “calvin” then immediately from “harold” once I had replied to “calvin”. They both sent the exact same message, and since I had sent out my initial contact as a mass message to 4 listings, it was even more suspicious. Here is what they both sent:

    And sorry for my delay, I was at work and had no internet access.
    My 2006 Nissan Maxima SL is in perfect working condition. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 92k miles. Vin #: 1N4BA41EX6C863926. 36. Same thing here on a 2000 Civic DX on craigslist. The thing that made me really question it was there was a dealer window sticker on the car. But they made it sound like it was a private seller. This is what they said.

37. Appreciate the blog. Just responded to one of these great deals from an overseas military SSgt. The first red flag involved shipping by military transport. Really. I am retired military and the vehicle just happened to be in the same area that I live in by a military base. 2006 Maxima. When I emailed that I live there after locating the car on Craig list in Charlotte, NC I have not heard anymore from this individual.

38. I suspect another scam from a divorcee who wants to get rid of the car. Unfortuntely the care is not where it is advertised on Craig list but is in another state1000 miles away. I asked to be called to have my questions answered but I have not heard a peep. I will not deposit my money with e-bay for them to make arrangements for me. 1999 Rava 4. What looked like it was going to be a good deal my be too much to be real. Thank God for research capacity. No one (or at least not me) has money to just give away to scammers.

    I just receive an notification from ebay ,in which they stated that you can not complete this transaction because you don’t have the funds available. i am very disappointed because you don’t tell me from the start about this. Car is in a great shape, you have nothing to worry about these aspects. I have all the documents inside the car so you will get those along with it( the car will be delivered with the title, owner’s manual, 2 sets of keys, service records, and of course the bill of sale authorised and signed by me.

    It is absolutely rediculous for people to take atvantage of people qho are just looking for a good deal!!! dont fall for it people!!!

43. I got into a similar situation with a Toyota avalon on ebay. The woman said her son had died and it was his car and she didn’t want it around anymore. I did some research and sure enough, it was a scam. Your situation is especially seedy because someone presented themselves as a member of the armed forces. It’s a shame.     1800 for the car- a nissan Altima.
    turned it into the high way patol, and fbi.

45. I see your posts about people pretending to be military and having a vehicle for sale. Add one more list to the name of scams.. They are also using Jane Capwell. My daughter recieved a response to a add for a maxima for sale on craigs list. This supposed Jane Capwell responded with links to the pics of this vehicle and photos of the vin number. Also included a CARFAX report!!! How they did that I don’t know.. but they did it. Turns out this is a scam!! When she came to me about it.. being former military and having a husband who is retired military also who still currently works for the military.. we knew right away it was a scam. The govt is not in the habit of shipping people cars for free just because the saler is or was military.. it’s just not happening!!!! My rule of thumb for anything like this is.. If it sounds to good to be true then it probably is!! Hope this helps..

50. I think the scariest part is that the object isn’t always to get the big money, but just to get names, addresses and phone numbers for identity theft.

    In many cases they are preying on very vulnerable people, in fact, they count on it…

    In my hunt for a car this week I ran across 2 versions of this scam.

    The first email was a mother saying she had lost her husband and son 2 months before, so she was selling her son’s car.

    The second one I kept getting forms of, claiming to be military, and this makes me so sad because I was in the military and life is hard enough without people using people in a military situation for a scam, and that turns my stomach.

    Since this web highlights the military scam, i will post the 3rd email from 2 different people:
