While shopping online on Craigslist.com for a used car for my son, I can across this ad:
2000 HONDA Accord EX V6
LEATHER SUNROOF 200 Horse Power V6 Automatic Transmission Naples Gold Metallic Exterior Soft Plush Leather Interior In Dash CD Radio Remote Entry …Perfect CarFax History…No accidents no damage no problems…
The price? $2960!
With 116k miles, that’s at least $2000 below Kelley Blue Book! I excitedly emailed the contact and asked to make an appointment to see it.
The response was this in its entirety (emphasis mine):
Hello and sorry for my delay,
I’m Sgt. Robert Parra. This Honda is in perfect working condition. This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. No electrical problems on this beauty. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior looks like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 118k highway miles. VIN Number: 1hgcg1655ya068349
It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones. The body and paint are great. The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet.
Here are the pics of the car :
http://s229.photobucket.com/albums/ee106/accpix/As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it(for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you will don`t be satisfied about the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back.
I am located in London, United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and UK. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in US because we can’t register it here; it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take for ever. My final price on it is US 2,960 $. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 3 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.
Best Regards,
Robert Parra
Can this be legit? I am hoping it is!
I sent a message back to “Sgt. Parra” and asked him whether the car will pass the smog check for California. I figured if it was really legit, someone else probably bought it already, but it’d be worth asking.
Then a couple of hours later, I get another email. I contacted another seller of another ad from Craigslist for a Camry that I thought was a good buy.
Here is the email response in its entirely (emphasis mine):
Hello,
The 2003 Toyota Camry is located in Farmington, CT and it is in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever. It has 44k miles and the VIN is: 4T1BE32K03U655388. It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. I have the pictures hosted on the net and you can see them at:
http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/RobertBright/The price is $2,900 including shipping costs anywhere in the continental US. There are no other costs regarding this transaction.
The transaction will be closed only through a 3rd party and this way we will both be protected. My time is limited due to my job in the army so I decided to use a service from Worldpay. To begin the transaction I’ll need your full name and shipping address. I will forward the details of our transaction to Worldpay and then you will receive an invoice from them. The car will be shipped insured to your location with DAS and you will have 5 days for inspection.
Best regards,
Robert Bright.
I am catching on now…
Both cars advertised at incredible prices at about $2,900, both seller’s names are Robert, both are willing to ship from out of the area for free, both are in the military, both use photobucket to post pictures …
Since I’ve been scouring Craigslist, Autotrader and dealerships for a car, I had sent out several emails. I forgot what I sent out.
So a couple of hours later, I got yet another response, for an Acura I asked about.
Now I am rolling on the floor laughing!
Here’s an excerpt:
Hello and sorry for my delay,
Yes, I know, you are busy in the military, right?
The 1999 Acura TL is in perfect working condition. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line….It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones…The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet…
You must’ve been talking to Sgt. Robert Parra! Both of you have a cat! And do you also have a wife who doesn’t check ahead of time if a foreign car can be registered in the UK?
As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program…I am located in London,United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and Serbia. One months ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can’t register it here…It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. …
It’s Serbia now, very nice.
Best Regards,
Michael Parker
At least they are getting a little more creative with the name.
I googled this subject and found a forum discussion of someone who got this email, a friend of the Roberts, no doubt, and coincidentally also named Robert, with a cat and a wife who just joined him too! I put an excerpt here, but I’m sure you can figure out what the rest says:

I might have fallen for the first reply if the scammer would just be a little for creative in their approach.
Apparently, an epidemic of ads like this is on all kinds websites, including the sale of motorcycles, ATVs, jet skis, motor homes, trailers, and even farm equipment.
One member of the forum responded with this advice:
1. eBay does not “hold the money” until you are satisfied with the car. Once you pay them, that is it. And I suspect they will ask you to pay by Western Union.
2. The military does ship cars overseas for servicemen (why does this guy talk in pidgon english if he’s American, anyway?). But thet SHIP them, by SHIP, not by air. Total LIE.
3. American servicemen can drive their cars overseas without registering them there. Again total LIE. Why would a serviceman have a car shipped overseas if he could not register it?
The pattern is the same: a coveted item (BMW, Kobota Tractor, Honda motorcycle, etc.) worth $10,000 to $20,000 is offered for a pitiful amount – $2500 to $5000 with a long-winded “backstory” behind it. You wire them the money, thinking you scored big and that’s the last you hear of them.
They hijack eBay identifications by using those phishing scams. Typically if you look at their feedback, you’ll see it is some little old lady in Arkansas selling dolls. Suddenly, the person is a Seargent in the Army in England selling a car. What gives?
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is….
almost got scammed by some loser with a 04 acura tsx for $4800…big red flag came up when he wanted me to western union money to a ebay agent and they would hold the funds..haha im a little smater than that..so i sent him a link to the ebay fraud alerts..havent heard anything else since..i even contacted the local sheriffs office and they cant do a thing because no crime had been committed. had i given him the money then they could of investigated it, but its so untraceable they would probably never find the loser..hope this saves someone else a little money!
Just noticed this same person
Hello again,
Thank you for still being interested in buying my car, I will respond your inquires, but first let me explain you how
the whole process for this transaction will work:
I’m realy sorry for you but i think is to late for inspection because i’m not in the country for the moment (like you know i just finished the divorce with my husband and i have moved to my parents home in Tampa/Florida/USA for a while.)
The car will be shipped from London Ontario/Canada
I want to tell you that we will use ebay in this transaction in order for both of us to be 100% protected and insured by them, eBay will supervise over our transaction. They will take care of the shipping (The car is already at the shipping company with all papers and documents ready to be shipped) and all the small details. You will get the car and you will have 15 calendar days return-policy in which you can decide if you will buy the car or not. In the inspection period you can test the vehicle, go with the vehicle at your local mechanic for inspection, but do not put more then 200 Kms on it.
After your inspection period (15 calendar days) In case you won’t like the car (not your case) you will notify eBay and you will send the car back on my expense, if you want to keep it you will also announce eBay, you will send the funds (payment method and all the details will be set up by eBay) and you will keep the car. Please get back to me with your FULL NAME & FULL ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER so i can forward your details to eBay in order for you to receive your purchase invoice and if you will agree with what will find in the invoice will go from there,
eBay will contact you with an invoice and they will explain you how to start this transaction all the details and instructions for this transaction will be found in the invoice and you will see this transaction is legit. If you will disagree with the transaction proposed by eBay, you can simply refuse to continue with the transaction and would be no problem, i still have a few offer’s left.
Wait your reply
PS: Don’t forget to send me your FULL NAME & FULL ADDRESS if you are really interested in this car.
And also I will need them for further collaboration regarding the transaction and better explanation of the whole process!

Oh my goodness. I can not tell you how stupid I feel. but how lucky I feel at the same time. I almost sent this jerk over $5000 of our hard earned money that would have probably never been returned. I am just so glad that I tried to do this transaction at a place where I do a lot of other business and the lady there told me that it was not a good idea and then let me use her computer for almost an hour to look up stuff. The seller and the eBay rep was not found in the cities that they said they were from, one from Billings, Mt and the other from MIami, Fl. there was no such address for either one of them either. The lady at the money gram place told me that there is no such company that eBay does business with that is named eBay Motors either.
We did check on a couple of different cars and then little things caught my attention on them after I realized that the first one was a scam. If you look a the emails that u get look at the ( ‘ ) that is on the words that use them such as I’ll and don’t and stuff like that. the ‘ is wierd. it is the same in all the different emails even if they are from the supposed other person that has nothing do to with the first one,
When I asked to be able to talk to this lady on jeep I gave her my number and my husbands number and never got a call and then she emailed me back and said that her phone is not working and that she has a complaint in to the phone company and that she was told that it can take up to a week to have her service reconnected. I asked to talk to the guy on an excursion and he came up with the excuse that he is on a base and that he is not allowed to talk on the phone when ever he wants to but that was strange to me because he was sitting on the puter and answering all my emails with in 5 minutes at all different times. The scary thing to me is that they have my REAL name my REAL address and my REAL phone numbers.
I hope that they get what is coming to them, I am thinking about sending them all an email back and just only say “karma, kicks u in the axx every time”
I hope that every one is made aware of this scam and is able to stop them from doing this to any one else.
I got the same email from two different sellers. I was VERY sad to know that car wasn’t really for sale. I REALLY wanted that 2004 Camrey.
Here is a similare one listed on Ebay right now:

I’m sorry but I am not at home, I’m in this military base and I left the car at the shipping company and all I need is an address where I want it delivered. I will take care of the shipping charges as I told you in my first email. It will come with a clear title full registered in your state. I am a member of the eBay buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 3 days testing period after delivery. During that 3 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask eBay to send you the details on this deal. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay (name, address and phone number), so we can get the ball rolling.
Sorry meant Craigslist.com
I just got this reply today for a request for more information on a great deal. Please note the similarity with the posting above from Sheila (October 9th, 2009 at 10:00 am) and a few others. The car was posted at Cars.com.

I almost fell for the same thing, at first I was iffy about it because the first email was way to clean cut, bolded, underlined very professional, nothing a normal car owner would commit too the email went like this
Hello,
This 2003 Honda Accord EX Coupe has a clear title. The general condition is excellent with no cosmetic complaints really worth comment. Counted a few stone chips The alloys are all presentable and originals the fronts having a few marks, all tyres in good condition with plenty life remaining. Clean carpets, seats, roof, boot and plastics. Both remote keys are present and they are working, no electrical issues.
I bought the car when I was serving in Fort Sam Houston, a U.S. Army base near San Antonio, TX.
Price was reduced to $3,500.00 (URGENT SALE) as I need to sell this car before 21 March when I will leave with other troops in Iraq.
In order to sell my car, the financial part will be handled by Yahoo. That means that you will have 48 hours available for any inspection of this car. In this way both of us will be 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.
If you’re really interested in buying my car, make sure that you really have the cash available and please email me your :

Phone Number
I will open a transaction with Yahoo and they will contact you further and they will explain you the steps of this transaction.

Hope to hear from you as soon as possible

I tried looking up this email on facebook, google and myspace and nothing showed up confused a little I sent her more emails for an inquiry on her car and how we would handle the transaction
scammer replied this
Hi,
Please take a few moments and read my email carefully, I know it is long, but because I received too many offers, I will explain all the details about the car and the transaction.
At the moment I’m stationed at Hancock Field AGS an US Military AFB in Syracuse, NY. making final preparations before deploying to Iraq with the U.S. Convoy
The car is stored in a hangar at our Military Logistic Department form Turner Air Force Base near Albany, Georgia. The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. Since the car is in a military base, with no access you can not go there and take it, only the Logistic Department can deliver it, because the car is in their custody.
I have all my stuff stored in a Military hangar, and I have the option to send this things to my relatives, in US, to keep them there while im gone. So i will declare to my Logistic Department that you are my relative and im sending the car to keep it at your home. Shipping may take anywhere between 2 to 5 business days depending on the destination. All documents you need for ownership, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the car.
For the payment I would like to use Yahoo as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the car and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep the car. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the car before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 7 days to inspect the car. If you decide not to keep it Yahoo will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for both of us.
I am glad we can move on and I have already forwarded your information to Yahoo third party department. So just e-mail me and tell me if you received the payment invoice and how long will take till you proceed with the payment as Yahoo instructed you.
The shipping process will be done by a military carrier with full support from our Logistics Department. It will take around 2-5 days until the trailer will deliver the car to your home address. All the documents you need for ownership; title, manuals and the bill of sale, etc.. will be provided along with the car.
PLEASE NOTE!
If the car is not how I’ve described it, you have the unequivocal right to refuse acceptance of the car (return postage on my expense) and you are entitled to a full and complete refund of the car’s purchase price. It will be insured during transportation and will be delivered in front of your door.
Again I want to point out that because I am going to Iraq this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.
Regards!
—-What I was confused about is your in new york? and your cars down south? its a nice car you don’t really need an extra 3500 in iraq if your working so why wouldn’t you keep it with your family? and if your car is down south and your in new york why are you posted on Seattles craigslist? suddenly everything that didn’t make sense started to make a whole lot of sense—
more
Hi,
I just checked my email and I found a couple of emails from Yahoo in my Spam/Junk folder.
Did you received the invoice from Yahoo ?
When you receive the Yahoo invoice please read it carefully so you can understand the entire payment process.
Please let me know when you can transfer the money to Yahoo agent so i can make all the arrangements for delivery.
Also I have a friendly advise, don’t tell at the Westernunion office that this is the payment for a Internet purchase or that you send the money to an Yahoo account/agent, because both of us will be extra charged with some extra fees for making e-commerce. We can avoid paying this money. If the Westernunion agent ask you, just tell that the money are for a relative/friend.. I will also do the same thing with the shipping so you don’t have to pay any fees. I am not willing to spend some useless money, I hope you will understand why I am asking you this.
I will declare to the Logistic Department that you are my cousin, and i have to send the car over to your home, to keep it there while I’m in Iraq, so i dont have to pay any fees. With the car you willl receive 2 keys, title, bill of sale and all the car documents and manuals.
Also you have to pay a normal transfer fee at westernunion, this fee is around $200, but since i pay for the delivery it will be nice if you can pay this fee, if you dont have any extra money right now you can deduct this fee from the total amount.
Let me know…
Thank you
basically this is all full of shit and I almost fell for it, thank god for this blog and everybodys examples I even told her i would send her a money order in the morning! I also even called Chase Bank where the money was suppose to be a deposit and look for the guy ‘Todd Watson’ who would be handling my money phew thank god i didn’t fall for this, I was going to spend my stolen car insurance check for this fraud! ridiculous, sick how people are… using the military to manipulate innocent consumers FUCKKKK YOU SCAMMERS
I just received one from a lady whos husband supposedly died in Iraq 3 months ago and she needs the money to take care of her unborn daughter. ?????? So the 350z is selling for 1/3 of the market price. Crazy what people will say to try and rob you blind.
Another one for the road. First hint was Multilple/overlisted on craigslist.

When I’m bored I sometimes inquire about these obvious
scams. I pull their chain for 3-4 emails then quit. If the car
is in the states I find out what city(usually 1000+ miles from me).
I then look up a map of the city and find a small suburb 40-50 mi.
away. I then send out this email. “Great! My sister lives in xxxx.
My brother in law can come out and look at it and if it suits him
he will pay cash provided the papers are in order. That usually
ends everything.
I had one guy get pretty mad when he said it was on ebay. I kept
asking for the item # and his PayPal ID for the transaction. He said
“He pulled the auction because he had a buyer that fell through.” I
kept on about the # and he got madder. He said “I already told you
the sale was ended!” I told him ebay doesn’t remove the auctions,
they just become inactive. They are still on site for 90 days. That
ended the emails.
BTW…Ebay doesn’t have an inhouse escrow service.

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and inspect it (for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you won`t be satisfied with the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back.
I am located in London,United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between our country and United Kingdom. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because In order to be able to register this car here, I would have to pay very high import/custom taxes. My final price on it is $ 2800. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 4 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.
Thank you, and have a nice day,
James and Anna Norman

I have just been scammed by Sgt. Carlos Arellano in the UK. It was a 2003 Honda Accord LX, a birthday present for my son that just turned 17. Wow. If I only googled him earlier I would have be smarter. I really thought this was a real deal. We were so excited. I have lost $2800 plus $135 fee for Western Union. I have only read of one other person that actually sent the money. Does anyone have any idea what to do next? Who do I report this to? I am so sick over it as is my son, Nick. How can people be so heartless?
By the way, feel free to send him emails at [email protected]
I hope he gets what he deserves one day soon!!!
I also fell for the scam but the person selling the car was not in the military, I am. The emails between me and the seller were basically just like everyone else’s minus the military service. My person had just gotten a divorce and the car belonged to her ex-husband. Well I fell for it and I am also out $2900. I am just starting out in the Navy and it sucks that my paychecks that I had been saving for a car now went down the drain.
I would also appreciate if anyone knows what to do next.
“OMG” My heart goes out to all the ppl who lost money on these clowns
as I almost fell for this scam as well… I prayed to God that this was all real
and something told me to do my research on these ppl!!! I was told a long
time ago that if it sounds to good to be true then it is…
This is sad how they tried to play me with a flawless 2001 Cadillac
Deville DTS:
They email me back with this MSG:
Hi,
The car has 90,800 miles, automatic trans. It’s in perfect condition,no electric/engine problems,no accidents/liens/loans.Exterior no scratches, never been repainted,Interior no rips/tears/stains,never smoked inside.I have all the car’s manuals,2 spare of keys, title, documents.I’m selling this car because my son of 19 years old died 1 year ago, he was hit by a drunk driver that went thru a red light and broad-sided my car.Now this 2001 cadillac deville dts brings me bad memories and I really can’t drive it anymore…hope you understand my pain in this moments. If you are really interested in buying the car please do take care of it as we and my son did because it’s a beautiful car and it would be ashamed not to…The last price is $2,900.
Me and my husband travel a lot with our personal business and we want to make this deal through eBay’s Vehicle Purchase Protection Program.I just need your full name, full shipping address, home/cell # so I can open a case.(with no further obligation or fees).eBay will contact you with all the Transaction/shipping details you will need.We will take care of the shipping so don’t worry.

I just got a similar offer from Craigslist for a Toyota Tundra that is way below normal price:
“Hello , I do a special training program each day and I’m not allowed to make phone calls whenever I want. We`ll have to stick to email for now as this is the only way I can communicate.
The transaction will be fully under eBay’s surveillance, giving us both security and insurance that nothing will go wrong. They will be the 3rd, objective party involved in the transaction. This way you will actually pay for the vehicle after you will receive and test it, because eBay will hold the funds in an escrow account and release it to me only after you accept and confirm the delivery. After the vehicle reaches your address you will have 10 days to test it. Within this period you have to decide if you purchase it or not. If you decide to take it you will have to contact eBay and let them know that, so they can release the payment to me. If you won’t like it you will have to ship it back to me within the 10 days and eBay will refund you. The shipping back will be done on my own expense, but I am sure this will not be the case.
If you decide to buy the Truck ,please include the following information in your next email.
1. Ship to name and address ( the complete name and address of the person receiving the Truck ).
2. Motor vehicle registration name and address needed for title transfer, this would be your complete name and physical address (or if the Truck is to be registered on someone else’s name the name and address of the registrant is needed).
Please get back to me if you’re interested in buying it.

This is certainly a scam and I have no intentions of sending money to anyone.
How about this advert – do you think it’s the same scam?

I KNOW IT IS A LONG EMAIL BUT PLEASE READ THE WHOLE MESSAGE AS I DO NOT HAVE MUCH TIME AVAILABLE TO BE ONLINE.
I want to tell you that I’m member in the British Forces and for the moment I’m in Hungary!
Price was reduced to 2,000 GBP (URGENT SALE) as I need to sell it in 2 weeks because I will leave with other troops in Afghanistan .
In order to sell my car, the financial part will be handled by eBay Sopping Services. This service was made only for British Forces members!
With this service you will have 48 hours available for inspection of the car. This way, both of us will be 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.
If you are really interested in buying my car, make sure that you really have the cash available!
I will open a transaction with eBay and they will contact and will explain you the steps of this transaction.
At the moment I’m stationed at Budapest AGS an British Military AFB in Budapest,Hungary making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan with the British Convoy.
The car is already crated and ready to be delivered to it’s new owner at our Military base from Preston, England in the Logistic Department. The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. Since the car is in a military base, you can’t go there to take it, only the Logistics Department can deliver it, because it’s in their custody.
Shipping may take anywhere between 5-7 business days depending on the destination. All documents you need for ownership, log book , manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the vehicle.
For the payment I would like to use eBay as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get and inspect the vehicle. I receive the money only after the inspection period is over and you agree to keep the car. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the car before committing to buy and
to eliminate any concerns you will have 2 days to inspect it. If you decide not to keep it eBay will refund your money back, no questions asked, and taking it back will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for both of us.
I’ll start the official procedure, and eBay will contact you about this. If you are interested in buying it just mail me back with:
– Your Full Name – Required by eBay (You’ll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.)
– Your Delivery Address – Required by the eBay and Logistics Department (They will contact you by email with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule work best for your to receive the car)
Again I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.
I preferred to talk all the transaction details by the phone but beeing in a military base getting ready for Afghanistan gives me no access access to the phone for the next 2 weeks
Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!

The transaction will close only through eBay so we both will be protected.
I want eBay because as they are the biggest company on the Internet I think that we can close this deal fast and safe for both of us. Also I am not very familiar with the Internet transactions and eBay is the only one I know.I will look for your email,so that we can move forward with this deal!
Let me know.

HA! just almost happened to me as well. I immediately thought it was too good to be true but decided to bait this woman. Email trail starts from the bottom up. This person supplied me with a copy of the title and a legit carfax ( i pulled one myself before hand) Sneaky sneaky…
Not too long after this trail the same lady sent me an email about an 06 Honda Civic for $4900
Sabrina Ferreira
i sent her an address that is not mine.
Do you mind sending some sort of identification whether it be a military ID number or a US DL # for my records? Also if this transaction is going through eBay will u be sending me an invoice through paypal?
When you send the documents the title needs to be signed accompanied with a US Driver’s License that is notarized.

Hi Debra,
I’m sorry for all the questions but i think you can understand this seems too good to be true. What state in the US is the car registered in? and is there a way you can send me a color digital copy of the title? I searched the VIN number and it says the car has 7 records, is there a way you could send me a carfax report? I don’t want to waste your time or mine and this seems like a very secure transaction but i don’t want you to send the car all the way over here and then have any surprises.
Thanks so much

Hello ,
Thank you so much for your prompt response.
Regarding the price, to be honest with you…this was my brother car but he is not…anymore.I don’t want to get rich by its selling, just want to give it to someone who will take good care….
It s difficult for me to talk about this…As I already said in my first email, the vehicle is currently located in UK but still registered in US, so it doesn’t cost you anything since it has a clear US title and no lien.
I can have it shipped from here by an US Air Force cargo plane so there won’t be any additional shipping costs for you. Also I can arrange for a SUV to transport it to your home address or you can pick it up from the nearest airport in your area. The shipping takes up to 7 days, depending on your location. The vehicle will arrive with all the papers and documents required for registration and the keys. You’ll get the US clear title and the bill of sale signed by me.
The entire price you have to pay is $5,000 US. The transaction will be fully under eBay’s surveillance, giving us both security and insurance that nothing will go wrong.
This way you will actually pay for the vehicle after you will receive and test it, because eBay will hold the funds and release it to me only after you accept and confirm the delivery. After the vehicle reaches your address you will have 10 days to inspect the car. You will have to inform the eBay Service about the decision to keep it. eBay will forward the payment to me and the transaction is complete. If the car is not as advertised and decide not to keep it (I’m sure this will not be the case) eBay will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back of the vehicle is be my concern. I consider it’s fair for both of us.
Please take into consideration that I get paid only after you receive the car and make sure everything is exactly as you expected.
If you decide to buy the car, please include the following information in your next email.
1. Ship to name and address ( the complete name and address of the person receiving the car ).
2. Name and address needed for title transfer, this would be your complete name and physical address (or if the car is to be registered on someone else’s name the name and address of the registrant is needed).
Please get back to me at your earliest convenience.

Hello,
Thank you for your interest in my car.
This is a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE , AUTOMATIC, ONLY 23,784 Miles, VIN 4T1BK46K07U015227. Clear title, no lien.
Here you can find more pictures with the car: http://s996.photobucket.com/albums/af84/cmryx
The vehicle is in EXCELLENT condition; the body and paint are immaculate, no scratches and no dents; the interior is clean; it has never been involved in any kind of accident.
I’m an US Air Force Maj. currently stationed in the UK and the car is here with me. It was bought from USA and it still has US registration documents, because I didn’t register it here in UK.
The shipping will take up to 7 business days and you will also have 10 days to inspect and test drive the vehicle from the moment it arrives at your place. I will pay for shipping. There will be no extra or hidden taxes for you to pay since the car is still registered in US. In case you decide not to keep the car I’m responsible for shipping back costs.
As I’m unable to travel in the near future and I don’t have anyone available back home to help me with the sale I decided to sell this car through eBay or craigslist. The transaction will be made entirely through eBay Motors and we both will be covered. That means you will not send the money outside of USA.
The final price is $5,000 US including shipping from Europe to the US and delivery to your home address. So if you decide to buy this car or need further information please get back to me as soon as possible.
Thank you and have a great day
Maj. Debra L. Madison

I’m so glad I found this forum, apparently they are still at. The name Kevin Dunn didn’t come up with any hits but then I got an email after I asked about the car.

I knew after I got the email that it was a scam and I replied to the email saying so, but I’m glad I found this posting!
This week my husband and I came across ANOTHER instance of the fake military personnel trying to sell a vehicle on Craig’s list at an unreal price….
In our case we were looking at a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder 4×4 with only 38,000 miles – asking price was $2900
You know the saying “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is…”
Below is the email that I received from the seller after inquiring on their posting through Craig’s list:
Hello,
This 2005 Nissan Pathfinder LE, with 63,500 miles, runs and drives excellent. Hasn’t been involved in any accident. It has no leaks or drips and does not smoke at all, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions with a clear title. I bought it when i was serving in Naval Base Point Loma, in San Diego, CA and now I am in London, UK.
I have dropped my price to $2,900 usd (purchase price) since this is an Urgent Sale! and I need to sell it before 6th July, when I will be deployed in Iraq with my platoon replacing the troops scheduled to come home.
If you’re interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner email me your; Full Name and Shipping Address to open a case with eBay they will contact you to explain the entire procedure. You’ll receive important guidelines and payment instructions from them.
The financial part will be managed by them, which means that you will have a 5 days inspection period before committing to buy the vehicle. In this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Corporal Lisa Minor
Below is the email I received in response to my inquiry of the physical location of the vehicle and its’ VIN #:
VIN: 5N1AR18W45C739477
Please take a few moments and read my email carefully, I know it is long, but I will explain all the details about the car and the transaction.
At the moment I’m stationed in London UK. making final preparations before deploying to Iraq with the U.S. Convoy
The car is already at our Military Logistic Department in Point Loma, San Diego, CA, crated and ready to go. The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. The shipping is free for you. Since the car is in a military base, with no access you can not go there and take it, only the Logistic Department can deliver it, because the car is in their custody.

Again I want to point out that because I am going to Iraq this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.
Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!
After checking out the CarFax report, I sent the following email to the Seller:
Thanks for providing the VIN# and explaining the purchase procedures on eBay. My uncle is a Colonel in the U.S. Army and has offered to fly out to San Diego to complete this transaction for us. Please provide your Unit number and name/contact info on your commanding office so that he can coordinate with him/her.
Not too surprisingly, I never received a response….
I am also glad for this blog! 2 New additional names along with 2 new cars! One even included Auto Check info!! The 2 new names are Gerardo Buyher with a 2006 Honda Accord Ex for $2900 & Debra Madison with a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE for $5000 both in Dallas, TX!!
I almost fell for this too, the only thing I did do wrong was I gave out my home adress, what can happen?
ML, I just about sent mine before I decided to sniff around the smell and found this blog. I don’t think there’s a major risk there although banks often use address in addition to some other elements for ID verification. Unless you’ve been broadcasting your mother’s maiden name (ancestry.com!) and your birthday (facebook!!) and your bank account number (checks!!!) you should be OK…or not!
Oh yeah, two more names for the mix here, Andrew Cohen with VIN JTHBN96S965011872 and Robert Graham, no VIN (yet).
Ugh, got two similar emails, one claiming to be the WIDOW of an Iraqi veteran who just needed to sell her departed husbands car quickly. It just makes me sick to my stomach!
Hi there,
How are you doing today? Hope all is well,,,
I apologize for the delay, I’m in the military and now I am deployed in the United Kingdom with the US Marines and that’s why I couldn’t reply in time. Anyway, thank you for your interest in buying the car. Why is the price so low? I am selling it because I am here in UK with my work, and my regiment will be deployed in three weeks in Iraq and I think I’ll stay there for a while that’s why I’m selling it so cheap, … $3,500 shipping and handling included.
I intend to buy a new car when I’ll get back home. So all that I want to do now is to sell it at this price, because I need to sell it fast. The car is located at my division’s HQ in Florida, the car is in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever. The interior looks great. It is ready to be signed and notarized on your name .
I will take in consideration only those buyers who are really interested in buying the car, to be sure that I don’t waste my time with endless discussions. This way, I shall be assured of the serious intentions.
I’m very busy so it’s easier to sell on the internet and using a eBay shipping company is safer.
HERE PHOTOS http://img24.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=99843287.jpg
P.S So if you are interested please email me back , all i need from you is your full name and your full address, for the title transfer and your shipping address, this will be the address were you wish to receive the car.
Thank you very much for your consideration,

Found this 2006 Honda Odyssey Touring Van in Craigslist. Sounded too good to be true so I searched military car selling scam and found this blog. The free shipping and low price (about 20k below retail) sounded just too good to be true. Thanks for the posts.

The payment will be made to eBay and they will keep the payment in escrow until you notify them that you received and want to keep the car.
You will have 10 days of inspection after you receive the car in which you can take it to your mechanic , drive it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
In case you are not satisfied by the car and don’t want to keep it , you will have to notify eBay and a total refund will be sent in maximum 3 business days and i will sell the car to the next interested buyer in your area ( there is no need to ship it back because i want to sell it in United States since the car has clear US title).
I am currently in the military and i am located in Barcelona, Spain. The car is here as well. I was sent here to improve the military relationships between our country and Spain.
The final price for the car is $2999. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 4 -7 days depending in your location.
I am selling the car because i have made a loan back home to buy a new house and now i am forced to sell it asap because i have to pay the bank. It seems that the financial crisis affected us all.
Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.
Thank you and have a nice day.
Lt. Ryan Atkinson.
Here’s a similar email reply to a query posted on Craigslist. Now they use their “dead husband” in their explanation and that they work on a cruise ship.
Hello,
I have received your email regarding the 2004 Honda CRV with 78,900 miles on it. The car is in perfect condition, no scratches on it, no damage, clear title. The price for the car is $3470 with shipping included. I’m selling the car at this price because I can’t enjoy it due to my job (I work as a casino dealer on a cruise ship) and I left the car in Miami/Florida at the shipping company. I’m a single woman and I have nobody close who can use it. The car was my husband`s who loved it very much, but he did not enjoy it as he died in IRAQ 3 month ago. It brings very bad memories to me, I want to get rid of it.
The buyer will receive the car with all papers and receipts that he needs to register it to his name.
Shipping will be done whit DAS and it will take no more then 2-3 days. I have a friend there who will manage me a low price shipping and I assumed that it is my duty to pay for shipping. It will be delivered directly to your address.
Anyway, I have to let you know that I want a fast deal so if you are really interested in buying it, please reply with the following information:
-Your full name;
-Your shipping address (street,city,state,zip code)
-Your phone number
The transaction will be done only through eBay so we both will be protected.
I want eBay because as they are the biggest company on the internet I think that we can close this deal fast and safe for both of us. Also I am not very familiar with the internet transactions and eBay is the only one I know. I will look for your email, so that we can move forward with this deal!
Let me know.
Regards,
I replyed to a Maj. Debra Madison with 2007 Camry with 23874 miles for $5000. It was her brothers car and he is gone now. Sh is stationed in the UK and will ship the car, at no cost to me. I have 10 days to check it out and if I do not like it, she will have it shipped back. All I need to do is put the $5000 in an eBay account to get things started. I cheked with a retired Air Force person and she said “That’s not the type of official picture an Air Force officer would post”.
I guess we need to add this name to the list.

I checked today to see if the add is still posted on Craigs list and it is not.

It’s too bad law enforcement and the laws governing such activity have not kept up with the technology. Bet 50 bucks these guys are in Nigeria (remember all the emails about some vast sum of money that they wanted help to move out of the country?). Would be nice to send them one’s “personal information” in the form of a hyperlink containing a computer-destroying virus…of course, THAT would be illegal…
Wow I am going through the same thing right now. This guy claims he is preparing for a deployment and he cannot use the phone and can only email twice a day. I told him that I was going to pick the vehicle up and he just didn’t respond to that part he just sent me all the instructions. I want to know how I can hook this guy in, he already pulled the webpage but we are still conversing. This is too funny (no harm to those who really got scammed). I really want to get this guy and suggestions.
Im lookin at how old these post are and its 2010 and this guy is still trying to pull this stunt but you guys the funny thing is he actually switched it up a lil bit the message i got mine said it was a female and she moved to london and blah blah blah you guys know the rest … i would just like to say thank you for this blog because i knew this was to good to be true and i would have never known until my boyfriend told me this lady still would have to be present to get the bill of sale and a notary and when i tried to google more info this website popped up so i greatly appreciate what you all have done and posted but im going to let you guys see my message that i got as well …….

I am located in London,United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and United Kingdom. One months ago, my husband moved here with me and brought the car with him, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can’t register it here; it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take for ever. My final price on it is US 2,100 $. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 3 days. HaHa I have seen this twice, I was interested in a 2003 Honda Accord for 1950 white, and again yesterday I seen another 2003 Honda Accord green for the same price, and from learning my lesson on the previous time I contacted Sgt. Robert Willis and almost got scammed I decided to see what this guy would say. And sure enough the same exact thing:

I love how he signed his “wifes” name also. He is trying to make it seem more legit than it really is. I just dont understand how people can take advantage (or at least try to take advantage) of other people just looking for good deals. 🙁 It saddens me. I hope no one ever falls into their trap, and everytime I see one of their ads on CraigsList I WILL mark it as inappropriate. Best of luck to everyone out there.
WOW! I ALMOST GOT SCAMMED! Glad I decided to do a little more research first. I immediately thought-going through Ebay has to be safe so it must be legit. This scamming has been going on for so long. It’s really sad. Why can’t someone shut these people/this person down! I wonder where they get the VIN numbers from and what would come up if you did an autocheck on them.
Here’s the letter I recieved after inquiring about a minivan.
Hello,
Thank you for your interest in my car
This is a 2007 Toyota Sienna Limited VAN AWD, 3.5L V6 FI DOHC 24V Gasoline , AUTOMATIC, ONLY 24,084 Miles. Clear title, no lien. VIN# : 5TDBK22C47S003352
Here you can find more pictures with the car: http://s819.photobucket.com/albums/zz119/sienna_pic/
The final price is $6,800 US including shipping from Europe to the US and delivery to your home address. So if you decide to buy this car or need further information please get back to me as soon as possible.
Thank you and have a great day
Maj. Jennifer Hobbs
PS. Sorry for the long email I have tried to touch all bases
Corporal Michael Williamson can be added to the list. Trying to sell a 2004 GMC Yukon Denali. Supposedly he’s stationed in Alaska and about to head off to Iraq. The car is at the Military Logisitics Department in Fort Belvoir, MD. Exact same e-mail that Karen posted except for the name.
I have encountered something quite similar to this. While my husband and I were browsing for sale motorcyles we came across someone who works on a cruise line and didn’t need the bike and tried having the money wired to him. Luckily my husband knew not to get involved with that kind of stuff. It just is horrible that the scams are everywhere!
If a person claims to be in the military, just ask them to drop you a short email (even if it has no text) from their official military email address. It will end in “.mil” and EVERY soldier and civilian employee of the armed services has one. You won’t hear from that scammer again!
Car buyers on Craig’s List beware, obviously a total scam!
Here’s the response I received:

Hi,
I’m actually in the military and was looking for a car and got a slight variation to this email…
“Hi Paul,
Thanks for getting back to me in such a timely manner.
Let me tell you a few words about car’s location and i’m sure you’ll understand. My father served in US Army for 25years and now lives in Europe because my mother is from there. A few days before my father’s departure, I asked him to help me with the sale(shipping & payment process). The is located in a storage unit in SC(military base: Valdez) with the help from my father who was in US army as a marine. I can arrange the shipping pickup from the storage, but there is no way to get out there. I desperately NEED to sell the car because it is just sitting there and costing me 368 dollars a month to store. The only way I can get the Vehicle out of there is once the shipping is started. The car will arrive with all documentation(the Certificate of Title, Bill of Sale, Registration, all records of maintenance, warranties papers, etc…) required for registration and 2x keys. The shipping company will take care of all the formalities, including DMV registration. Another thing, the ownership will be signed and left in the truck with other pertinent documents.
The sale will be managed by eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program for our own protection as they act as a neutral 3rd-party. eBay will hold the money until you receive, test and accept the car. You have 7days to test it. If by any reason the car is not as described or if you find any problems with it I will pay for the returning fees, because i’m sure it won’t be the case.
The steps for eBay’s program are as I listed bellow.
– I will contact eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program and give them all the info about this deal.
– They will email us the forms which are needed for our deal.
– You will continue the transactions as eBay advised you and I will start the shipping process as soon as I will be informed.
– After you will inspect/drive the car and decide to keep it, eBay will forward me the money and the deal is done.
Ryan, if you decide to buy email me the following information so I can open a transaction case:
Email address:
Full name:
Full shipping address(Street address, City, Province, Postal Code):
You will receive all the transaction details from eBay. I apologize if it seems like I’m pushing on this deal but I really want to be sure everything is clarified before any further steps. No money first to me – I will receive money after you will receive the car. Since this deal will be made under eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection (VPP) plan, I prefer honest buyers.
Looking forward to hear from you!
Sandra Mitchell”
funny thing is, my name is neither Paul nor Ryan…there are NO military bases in Valdez, AK…there’s NO way her dad was in the US Army as a Marine! LOL…funny he/she tried to pull that on me, being that my very first email explained that I AM in the military…hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else.
I received a very similar email on a car listed on Sellmycar.com….here is the email:
********************
Hi there,
Thanks for your inquiry regarding my vehicle. I hope you’re still interested since it has never been wrecked or damaged, excellent condition, it doesn’t have any dents or scratches, accident-free and has a clean and clear Title. All the service and maintenance records are available and up to date, fluids have been recently replaced. I’m selling so cheap due to the fact that my medical team was ordered to go back to Afghanistan on November 15th for a 3 years contract and I won’t let it go old in my backyard, therefore I need a fast and reliable deal. My price is $5,900.00 (FIRM), shipping included. The vehicle is currently in the eBay warehouse in Marietta, GA (where I had it inspected before sale) and will be shipped to the buyer’s address for a 7 days inspection period (shipping 48-72 hrs). The financial part of this sale will be managed by the eBay’s Buyer Protection Program.
For further information please provide the buyer’s name and shipping address, I’ll open a temporary case and the company will contact you with all the information about this possible purchase.

Like everyone I was a little suspicious and am glad I found these postings. I Googled the name and VIN number and came up empty.
Another joyful car buying experience!

I just want a car.. and maybe CraigList is not the way for me right now..Thank you for putting this blog up…
Cherisse B.
Wow…These guys are getting good. I hate to say that about someone who commits fraud for a living. The VIN# even matched up perfectly to a similar vehicle being sold. It just sounded too good to be true and ya know what they say about that… Here’s the email I received.
“Good morning,
I am selling this vehicle because my brigade will deploy for 14 months to Afghanistan. I’m under enormous time pressure cause I need to sell it fast, before 4th of December that being the reason for selling it so low. It is in immaculate condition, meticulously maintained and hasn’t been involved in any accident…I do have the title, clear, under my name. The suv has 120,000 miles VIN# 5TDBT48A84S220137.
It is still available for sale if interested, price as stated in the ad $2,900. The vehicle is in Knoxville, TN ,and in case it gets sold I will take care of shipping. Let me know if you are interested, email back. Below are the suv details and also a link with more photos.
You can find more pics at: http://picasaweb.google.com/Sequoia
I am the second owner of this 8 passenger Sequoia. For a large car, it is very easy to maneuver & very comfortable to drive. Even the gas mileage isn’t bad, we get about 19mpg on the highway. There’s enough room for the entire family plus friends and all of the gear…even on those long vacations. The 3rd row seats “flip & fold” so there’s even more room when you don’t need the seats. Although there is a trailer hitch, we have never used it. The back up sensors are helpful and another nice safety feature. The vehicle has the upgraded JBL stereo with a 6 disc-CD changer. The 4×4 is terrific in the snow and bad weather. Automatic, 8 Cylinder 4.7 Liter, 4 Wheel Drive”
Now they are even doing Horse Trailers, here’s an email we received.
Hello,
This 2006 Exiss Sport ES 307 3 Horse Trailer is still available for sale and the asking price is $ 2950. It has only been used a few times and is in excellent condition with clear title and one-year transferable warranty. The trailer is currently located at approximately five miles of NAF. Key West, FL. stored in military compound. It’s available for immediate pick-up but it could also be transported free of charge by a military carier (Estimated Shipping Time: 2-3 business days). I’m looking for a quick sale, that’s why the price has been reduced to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer before my upcoming deployment take place.
Due to the urgent nature of sale, I’d like to conclude this transaction using the security provided by eBay’s Buyer Protection Program, they basically act as an independent third party between buyer and seller. If you’re really interested to move forward just e-mail me back with your; Full Name and Shipping Address and eBay will contact you to explain the purchasing procedure.
For a complete description of this horse trailer and more photos, please click on the link below or copy and paste it into your browser window.
